Burning Coal in Nassau County NY Legal???

I called a coal dealer in Nassau County today, there are no restrictions on residential burning coal there.

These are the two sources I know of on the Island. Bethlehem is who I've dealt with in the past. I started burning coal again after a 5 year hiatus and I have over 2 ton from then so I haven't bought any recently. Their web site went dark a while back but I see it is back up now. I've been happy with the coal I've gotten from them and they do service Nassau. Rella is further east and also deals in stoves; they seem like good people and easy to visit. If there's anyone further west, I'm unaware of them. Bethlehem used to publish multiple phone numbers in different towns giving you the feeling they had multiple locations but I think they are in the Brightwaters area.

Bethlehem is in Brightwaters. I'll be calling them next week for 2 tons to finish the season....

July 24, 2023 Had called the Town of Hempstead & spoke with Elizabeth of Code Enforcement. "Though it's not the best to use for heat, it is NOT illegal".

My parents had bought a coal stove back in the early - mid 1970's when the oil prices increased due oil shortage. Mom used it for 2 winters. It really made the house HOT. She HAD to open the upstairs door to let some of the heat out. At night I would have to open the bedroom window upstairs just because it was TOO HOT.

Too bad I don't remember what the price of oil was back then but I am sure we surpassed it. Last year May I had an oil delivery & it was over $1,100 for about 225 gallons. Have a 275gal. tank.

Perhaps Liz at code enforcement is an idiot. Maybe not.

People with these questions (and this is a > 10 yr old thread - from 2009 I would not rely on) should start hitting the statutes and regulation and do research.

When referencing a statute or regulation, a citation to it is best vs. just saying "regulations applies to electricity generators" v. "regulation XYZ applies to electricity generators". Links are nice but they go bad.
