Odd, I thought electric was cheaper.

I understand that this guy is disregarding the cost of the charger and the rental costs, however I'm still surprised at the cost difference on the energy itself.

I'm not surprised at all. For a long time, the EV pushers have had their thumb on the scale to try to win people over to their side. How good can it be if they have to give other people's tax dollars to EV buyers, and then pass laws that will force people to buy them ?

How often have we heard that the EV's don't get the distance the EV pushers claim ? And they always dance around the problems that EVs have with charging and distance in very cold or hot weather and the long wait times to charge... if you can find a working charger.

My village has some of the cheapest electric rates in the nation - .05 kwh total cost. Many people have switched their oil or gas boilers over to electric boilers because it is much cheaper than oil or gas. But good luck finding anyone owning EVs here.

The EV pushers are very much like the old-time snake oil salesmen.

Like I keep saying, if an EV was such a good idea, it would sell itself.

One thing to consider is when people purchase gasoline they have many choices. Sometimes there are huge differences in cost a block away. When somebody purchases an EV they are going to have to pay what their provider charges.

What does operating an EV have to do with anything? I have used electric forklifts they are ok if you are never leaving a factory. I've also seen a large diesel forklift pick up an electric forklift an carry it back to the charging station.

Im glad you like your rich mans power wheels toys. They aren't for everyone or every situation.

No worries about shouting, often people have very strong opinions and have very illogical reactions to information that goes against their beliefs.

How do you consider EV's to be rich mans toys...

Only ALL news makes you think this...

Brand new ev's are competitive with fossil cars...

https://www.toyota.com/prius/

Prius LTD all wheel drive base cost $36,365....

Tesla M 3 price with much more car...

Check the specs and be surprised...

Sooo, does that make you an EV supremacist? Or an ICE racist? Or is your fanaticism due to all the bit coal you have burned and your desire to make amends to the planet?

I'm not trying to start a flame war here but I couldn't afford a 36k anything. The most I could afford these days would be a 10k vehicle, the most expensive vehicle I ever bought was a 8 year old car an it was roughly 15k after all the tack on fees, an while it hasn't been perfect and I have to pay for  gasoline  it's what the Mrs likes and most importantly I could afford, luckily I have been able to keep it on the road.

This electric car thing is very politicized and nobody wants to look at the whole picture. They want to focus on a tiny part of the equation and pretend the rest of it doesn't exist, then double down on their preconceived ideas when they encounter new information that they don't agree with.

Electric powered vehicles have a place but that place isn't the entire market.

Anyway, back to the diesel generator. This could be a potential money maker for rental companies that have these types of generators. Those companies will already have a secure parking lot, the generators, and presumably trucks to move them around all they would need is the charger. They could either set up a stationary charging station or offer a mobile emergency charging service.

I watched this video once and don't plan to watch it again.
I don't remember if they addressed how long it took to charge the cars with the diesel generator.

I charge my Tesla on a 220 volt 60 amp breaker which, as far as I know, is the best/fastest charger for the home.
It only charges a little over 10kwh per hour. So a vehicle that is in need of charge that you want to fully charge would take about 6 hours.

I don't think people want to be on the roadside or a rental store parking lot hooked up to a diesel generator for 6 hours.

Charging at home is painless. Plug it in when you get home and unplug it before you leave.

There was an instance where my wife took the Tesla to NYC and she charged the vehicle before she left, went to NYC, and came home and charged it again, when she got home on the same day. I think we used 135kwh that day at the house.

I don't know how far she drove. She goes off with friends.
The reason I remember this is because I monitor my electric usage and that one day was extremely high use. So that is what was deduced is her car was charging in the wee hours of the morning and charging again after she got home.

I don't really care if the car get the equivalent of 30mpg or 50mpg or whatever. She likes the car. I think it is a good car. She claims best new car we have ever owned and as mentioned somewhere else on this forum we have had many new cars/trucks.

If I compare it to a new Mercedes, or Volvo, or comparable car, I think it is good. It is nice not ever having to go to the gas station and nice not having her always driving with her foot on the gas or brake.

So far I say a great car. But I don't think it is for everyone. ICE can be filled in less than 5 minutes and driven for hours. If you have ICE car and are running low on fuel or get stuck it is pretty easy to get a little fuel. Probably not so easy with an EV. I personally wouldn't want to be waiting an hour or more at a Super Charging station. I have no clue what the cost is when charging at a charging station. Charging at home is painless.

I am not an EV for everyone person. I bought one to get while tax credits were there and they don't tax per mile. If there was ever a time to buy one it is now. Prices have come down and the credits are still there. In fact had my car been $2000 cheaper I would have gotten a $4200 credit from the State of Connecticut. But it didn't qualify because MSRP was over $50k. So under $50k and you get that State rebate plus $7500 federal tax credit. But be aware the tax credit must be used in the year you purchase the vehicle. So if you don't pay that much in tax you won't be able to use the credit.

But.... My opinion is the car is a nice car when compared to vehicles with the same MSRP. So it is a good car.

With the Tesla ~300 miles of range we never had to wait for a charger...

Usually they have 8-100 charging stalls...Tesla is far ahead of other sites..

Either way from my home East we have 12 chargers, West we have 2

different sites with 10 and 12 stalls...

Home charging about 95% of the time...About $60 a month for charging...

For about 1600 miles...

Preference does not prove quality or a good choice. I do not have to have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day to make a medical analysis of whether it is healthy or not. Although those who do smoke might say they greatly enjoy it. This is the argument you're using, why can't you be OK with people preferring ICE over EV's, even for the time being?

Recent 'scientific discoveries' (or opinions for that matter) whether EV related or not are not GOD and are not set in stone. It is an insult to people's intelligence to tell them to read one random article and then call them idiots for not hurrying up and jumping on the bandwagon that was just constructed yesterday....

This isn't about refusing to accept EV's, it's about refusing to confess EV's (namely, Tesla) as the perfect, faultless, and best solution ever. Nobody is claiming that about our ICE vehicles, but that claim upon the EV world is both annoying and foolishly uninformed, er shall I say, willingly blind.

Well said.

EV's are not a new idea. They've been around in one form or another since the late1800's. Plus they've been pushing them as the green cure for over 25 years. Yet they are still having a hard time getting the public on board.

If they were really as good as he tries to make them out to be, he wouldn't have to try... he'd just need to get out if the way. ;)
