Shell Oil to close 1000 gas stations

"Gas and oil giant Shell is looking to close as many as 1,000 retail gas stations in the coming years, as it pivots toward deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. In its latest Energy Transition Strategy report, England-based Shell says it plans to close 500 retail sites per year in 2024 and 2025."

I believe both Shell and BP struggled with their oil business after the loss of Iranian oil fields in the 70's. Appears most of their assets and business is for natural gas and the petro chemical industry including a plant that just began operations here in PA in 2022.

Those gas stations were most likely retail outlets effectively being operated like your local gas station and far less profitable than their other fossil fuel interests.

When I was in CA I think it was them and Chevron that would be 50 to 75 cents a gallon more. Literally across the street. I saw it numerous times too. Everyone of those stations was empty.

We don't have any Shell stations near me... So I can't judge prices...

They just see the future and its not pretty...Of course I buy no gasoline...

There's only one Shell station/store within 20 miles of me. That would be a loss. Going by old tests, their Premium has by far the biggest dose of cleaning compounds. Even compared to other Top Tier brands. Even though their price is higher than the CS chain crap, this one is always busy. When it comes to the inside store traffic, it seems pretty dismal. I swear it seems that half of America lives on gas station food from Wawa, Sheetz, Rutters and others. Also, they almost all bought restaurant liquor licenses and sell beer and wine. The PA. government snuck in a gambling enhancement a few years ago. If you have a large number of semi diesel pumps and hot food available 24/7, you can get a video machine gambling license. Most all the larger ones have that now. Sort of a big separate room. Outside of building has "777" signage.

Amerada Hess sold off their Hess stations-stores about 10-12 years ago. They stayed in their core business of oil and gasoline, just got out of the retail store business after 60 years. Marathon bought them and rebranded most of them as Speedway. A few were renamed Marathon. A year or two ago, Marathon sold Speedway stores to 7-11 who kept the Speedway name. I can tell you that a 7-11 owned Speedway is as low as you can go.

That was pretty much the norm out West, every station had them. One place had sizable one with maybe 100 machines.

Here in my are they have them right in the store but those are skill machines. Coin pushers are common, as far as the video slot type machines I'm not sure what the skill is but they have to involve something other luck.

That's a lot of machines! I'm not real clear on it, but I think the new big, licensed parlors at Pa. truck stops and truck diesel/food convenience stores have real video slots. Never looked at them. I guess they also legalized the skill game only versions for non truck stops. Seems like every store has one or two. Right next to the meth/crack/fen pipe racks. That's just a permit. Bars had them for years even though they weren't really legal before. Clubs with liquor licenses have had small games of chance licenses for maybe 30 years. Some of those board games can involve a good bit of money.

Just like the two Hess stations here in Norwich. Hess sold them off years ago before the EV fad and both stations are still in business run by a company called Speedway.

Shell has not been much of a player in the gas station business for decades.

There are four gas stations on RT12 at the north end of Norwich, all within a stone's throw of each other and they are all doing fine.

I guess BB would say EV's closed Texico and Exxon old gas stations years ago, too.

It's usually wise to understand what the "facts" are.... According to this article from 2008 Exxon sold all it's company owned gas stations. Even then 75% of them were already not owned by them. I wouod imagine all Exxon branded stations are not owned by them today.
