When you expect to fire up your coal stove/appliance for heating ?

I generally start in October .. sometimes on the first if a cold wave hits

Usually by Halloween the Hitzer is humming along.

Usually the first week of October, but I have waited until Halloween a few times. This year is unusual because I fired up last weekend. I have some mediocre coal that has been sitting in the barn for years that needs to get burned up, so I might as well do it while I don’t need much for BTUs.

Our typical start date is September 15th... last year was October 4th. I burn year around so all I have to do is turn up the thermostat. I turned it up to 72 yesterday morning and it ran one time and it ran once again this morning. With cast iron radiators, once a day is usually enough when it's in the 50's.

Wood soon. Coal when we have a real cold spell hit, probably in December. My cold spell has to be below zero or close and windy.

I'm trying to get into October before lighting the Axeman up. Been using a little electric heat at night in the meantime. I'd like to get some use out of the Hitzer 503 insert also.

It's been a few years since I had to worry about this question. Since coal got expensive, I installed a heat pump water heater to take care of DHW in the Summer and shoulder months instead of running the boiler 365 days a year.

It's not really time yet for me to fire the boiler but, This weekend and into the week it's gunna be 50's - 60's, rainy and windy. So I think I'm gunna fire up the Harman SF3500 on a light load tonight. Hopefully the house stays under 80 degrees.

Wife is cold so todays the day. Raining and 56 outside ,house is 72 but wife still cold so theres that. I got a ton of coal cuz im late with installing my new gas boiler. Should have it going by late october. A ton of coal will last me to Xmas normally.

We used to tell people at work that were cold and didnt want a door open (factory work) that they could put on more clothes and if they didnt want to see a few of us in our underwear they would....

I should see how much oil is left in the tank for the oil furnace. have not added any since installing the efm 350. it's not cool enough yet to fire the boiler.
