Hand Fed Coal Stove: Golden oak 640

Post by thunderman0703 »

I just purchased this golden oak 640 made by the grander stove co. I'm interested in restoring this stove. Mostly surface rust it seems. Not sure if it's going to be used or just a decoration piece as the chimney hole in my house(built in 1959) is almost a foot lower than the exhaust on the stove and there is a huge crack on the bottom of the stove. I don't know anything really about these but it seems everything is there. There is an extra shaker handle(I think) the hinge on the bottom door is gone.

I tried looking through the posts here but can't find a good description on stripping rust and restoring all the pieces other than videos on YouTube using a wire wheel and sandpaper. And then stove paint or something like that. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you

Wow! You did say giant, but that's not what I imagined. You're missing some pieces on the inside. I guess it depends if you're just going to make furniture or heat. Start hitting all the nuts with some WD. It's going to be a project.

Yep. I sprayed them all. I'll probably spray them once a day until next weekend bc I won't have time to work on it during the week. There is a tray with another handle in the bottom and the exhaust pipe. But the pipe looks broken. There is also what looks like a piece of another half of a shaker tray.
