Hello. I need some advice. I have a small hard nut coal stove and a tile lined brick chimney in good condition. Two years ago a local contractor extended my chimney height by a few feet with a single wall SS flue pipe. Now, 2 winters later the pipe is holed with corrosion. One contractor is recommending I just hire a mason to extend my existing chimney using brick and tile without any liner. Another is recommending installing a complete SS liner system (with or without an extension?). A third says that even 316 SS with not withstand the acid from the hard coal over the long term. HELP! Who do I believe?
To complicate matters, there are only two local chimney contractors and both have bad reps.

If your chimney was in good condition, then why was it extended??? And how was it extended with SS w/o lining the whole chimney?? Somehow this ain't passing the sniff test!
Ifn you could post some pics of the chimney, including the top cap, might be able to help. Also check flue tile for any cracks.
