chimney caps

i remembered on here folks saying their rain caps rotting away, are theirs 304 SS or galvanised? does any place seel a 316 SS rain cap and wuld it last longer? thx

316 would be best if you can find it.

Mine is 304 and shows no signs of corrosion after 10 years of oil and 2 years of coal.

End of season my cap gets removed, washed off and stored in the shed. Fabricated a cover to put in it's place to keep birds, etc out of chimney. Managed to get 15 years, possibly more, out of a regular painted steel cap using this method. Replaced that old cap with a stainless one. We'll see how long that one lasts.

As Rob R says, the proper stainless is important. I had a heavy duty stainless cap fabricated 30 years ago at a shop. Didn't last all that long. Must of been the wrong kind. I have had Metalbestos stove pipe that was coal rated go bad also so I steer away from all stainless components with coal now generally.

Rockwell chimney supplies on line they sell 316 ti flex pipe, but i think the caps are only 316 with out the ti My cap is 10 years old while discolored it is still structurally sound

My cap was not 316 anything, and was chock full of pin holes after about 10 years of coal.
My Selkirk chimney pipe is not 316, either, and has started to disintegrate after 16 years. I replaced one section this year. The rest is still usable, outer shell is still OK, inner liner is getting tender.

I have fabricated and machined 304ss and 316ss, 316 is a bit more expensive than 304 but it's really not that much different both will rust if exposed to high heat, oxygen, acidity an moisture.
