Yes, if you use very short strokes the draw grate can be used in and out to shake ash. Move it too far out and you could be dumping parts of the firebed you don't want to. Or getting unburned chunks caught that won't allow the grate to close fully.
Best to use the left/right movement for shaking ash. Only use the draw grate to dump clinkers after the firebed has "bridged".
Once the clinkers are dumped then push the draw grate all the way in, collapse the bridge by pushing down around the outer edges of the firebed with a right-angled poker and then do the left/right shaking ash.
