Looking for a source for bit in northern IL I’m just about an hour from the wis boarder
Last time I bought some (almost 10 years ago now) I had to drive down to S. Illinois and went to Knight Hawk Coal: http://knighthawkcoal.com/. They were one of the few places that A) had stoker coal and B) sold to the public.
There's a mine down around Peoria (or maybe north of Bloomington) I believe, but have no idea if they sell to the public.
You're not going to find anything closer unless maybe it's something specialized like blacksmithing coal. I don't know where the steam tractor people or the Illinois Railway Museum obtain steam coal, but it wouldn't help me any since I need stoker size. With all the coal powerplant closings as well as the University system switching over from coal to natural gas, the demand for stoker size has all but disappeared.
Yeah I hear ya , I was asking one of the guys showing he’s steamer a couple weeks ago , all he knew is the have a truck load brought up from southern IL around the time of the sycamore show,I forgot about the train museum in union IL , I might have to pay them a vIsit place I used to wrench for hauled oversized we brought a few pieces over to that museum

Don’t know if you found any but viper coal mine in Elkhart Illinois (a little north east of Springfield) will sell one ton minimum. $86 a ton last year. I haven’t bought any this year. They call it stove coal but it’s more like stoker size. I’ve always been baffled by this. I’ve asked them a few times why they think it’s stove size and they swear it is. I don’t think they know much about size, just digging it. They mostly sell to power plants.
I didn’t get any this year , was gonna take a drive north or south with my trailer and get as much as I could , ended up got a bunch of oak , hickory and walnut just finished splitting last of it to empty my trailer , I get some time I’ll go get 3 tons I think
Last load of Bituminous for me this year! This should be enough to get me through "blackberry winter, "dogwood winter" and all those other "winters" this season. Bought from Sampson's Coal Co. in Owensboro, KY for $100 a ton picked up. Looked like they we close to the last of their coal pile for the season, but the guy who loaded me up shook the bucket rake pretty good and I got mostly lumps, with very few fines. Sweet! Thank you Sampson's guy!

For anyone looking to purchase Bituminous Coal in the area of Louisville. Ky. or Southern Indiana, I found a really great source, and agreed to "spread the word" for the owner. The Byrd Coal Yard (Mr. David Byrd) is located in the middle of Sulphur, Ky., exit #28 on I-71 east of Louisville. His address is 6071 Fallen Timber Rd. (KY 1606) on the North side of L&N Railroad tracks. He said you need to call (502-743-5258) before coming to make sure he'll be around. His coal is just downright beautiful stuff. Small Lumps to Slabs & anything in between. Built in truck scales- weigh you empty & loaded. He will sell you a truck load or a 5 gal. bucket full. I believe his rate was $189./ton. I filled sacks totaling 500lbs. in April 2022 and my charge was $46.00. I must say that Mr. Byrd is one heck of a nice man. The best shopping trip I've had in years!!
