What unit do you burn that in? What size is it? Stove size or smaller?

stoker size. He burns it in a Gentleman Janitor stoker under an EFM boiler.

Lightning, I have a hitter 503 insert that does well on it if your careful and am the proud new owner of a Legacy sf270 boiler, that I am currently installing.

I used to burn it in a gentleman janitor, but getting it sized small enough 3/4” was getting to be a real problem, so I will clean it up and sell it and hope I like the new legacy boiler.

Guys, does anyone know where I can get bituminous in NY, around Watertown, Alexandria Bay, Syracuse? I am hunting for a good coal in these areas.

Tractor trailer full....I need bituminous coal that doesn't bake (ash doesn't smelt). Because gonna use it in stroker.

Perhaps, smarter would be buy a pallet first and try....

Its been posted long before, but today i got my trial ton of Bit from HMZ Coal in Portage/Cassandra, PA. I paid $120 picked up including tax for a half Pittsburgh nut and half Indiana (PA) nut load , but he has a great little place. A very large selection of Bit and carries two large, popular anthracite brands. Once i pulled in i immediately recognized the smell from growing up in Altoona and a more so from a few years spent up in DuBois for college. Im not a very good (experienced) judge, but i had blue ladies in less than an hour on my first coal fire of my life, in a custom burner i bought just last week, so im guessing its pretty good? Or you guys are pretty good teachers, I REALLY appreciate this thread, it has taught me valuable information beyond locations and has been educational and instrumental in probably saving MUCH more money than already planned. Thank you.

Swenglish and sons near Smithfield, pa have run of the mine bit coal for $75/ton bulk...burns pretty good for stripped coal. Think they have rice and nut coal for $90-100/ton as well.

Talked with coworker/ coal burner yesterday said he buys coal at Valier Coal in Punxsy, PA. He is buying screened bit nut for $100.00@ ton and run of mine is $80.00@ ton. Said one 5 gallon pail a day heats his house so must be decent. Read through 11 years of posts and takeaway is bit coal price has not risen but may actually be selling for less if adjusted for inflation and rising costs to mine.
