As for the smell of coal, we did not have many coal burners here in Maine, so I just like the smell over wood smoke.
It is interesting because there are certain areas I often drive through where I know from the smell, the person burns coal in that neighborhood.
Hard or soft coal: I do not care, I just like knowing there are other smart people around! I learned at about 6 years old that firewood sucks!

I live in the Hudson Valley of New York and the only bituminous coal that I can find here is from a coal distributor in the area. He mostly sells Anthracite but has "House Coal" which is nut sized bituminous. I have no idea where it's from or how good it is. I have no other bit coal to compare it against. It is dull, not shiny at all. It smells like burning asphalt-tar. Is that what bit coal should smell like? After it burns a while it doesn't smell bad... somewhat pleasant tar like.

I like the smell of Bitty coal. but I also like the smell of Liquid Wrench (before the formula was changed) and Permatex Form-A-Gasket #2 which isn't around any more either.

Does Bit smell like anthracite? I love the smell of anthracite. Usually when I'm tending the stove and I go outside to get more coal I can smell it on the back porch

Same here! It still stinks but at least it works. Only thing that works better is Aerokroil. Someone told me Gibbs Lubricant is great too but I havent tried it. My dad told me the new WD40 specialist penetrating oil works great too

That's what they say! It always seemed to work well. Its pretty expensive to order. I haven't seen it around here for yearsHoytman wrote: ↑Sat. So found a chunk in my barrels I was cleaning out. I knew I hit some bit this week. When I was getting the mail some of the older neighbors on their daily walk said it’s been smelling oddly bad on this end. The difference in layering was interesting.

Thought 20/21 season was over but looking at a week of 40 deg weather in Western PA decided to build a fire. Instead of buying more anthracite I went out and dug into a 35 year old pile of bituminous I hauled home from my coal miming days. The belching smoke and stench is obnoxious, isn't something I'd burn normally. The flame is pretty yellow and looks like a wood fire. I can only imagine growing up in the day when everyone was burning it around here.

Just learned you have to go through a distributor now or go through Amazon where it is still expensive. No more ordering direct from Kroil.11ultra103 wrote: ↑Sun. By the way, the smell of Kroil and Royal is awesome. Not together of course. LOL! Where you been man? Need some updates on that 75 wood and coal.
