The Rat Zapper from amazon works wonders and I have dealt with over 65 field mice and a small Norway rat so far with my second unit.
The Rat Zapper uses 4 D batteries to power a capacitor and it uses a circuit board to control it. The Rat Zapper electrocutes them within milliseconds of the mouse or rat entering the trap to eat the bait that you use.
I use Purina One dry meal dogfood as bait and it is a no fuss, no muss bait, I throw the mouse/rat away with the dog food and toss in some dry dog food and it is a good bait food. The LED lights up as a green light when you tun the power on and when it electrocutes a mouse or rat it switches to a red LED that blinks until you turn the power off by pushing the rocker switch to off and then you can safely handle the trap to get rid of the mouse or rat.
To clean it I push the rocker switch to off and remove the 4 D batteries and run hot water through the bottom of the Rat Zapper for at least 5 minutes and then let it dry for 24 hours and then I reinstall the batteries and pour in a little dog food and then set it down and pus the rocker switch to the on position and the green light comes on briefly and goes out and its ready to electrocute the next victim.
When the batteries become weaker the green light will blink and it's time to install new batteries. The old batteries are still good for a radio so you can still use them for a while.

I use those new plastic snap traps. Rat bait cubes for bait .They smell like peanut butter.Very effective. I dont use just bait in the house because they go off and die somewhere and stink. From the trap you can flush.
