Battery going bye bye in laptop

I recently did that with Windows laptops and desktops.
I just used a large capacity flash drive from Walmart. Did the drag and drop of all the folders, and my email address folder, onto the flash drive, then drag and drop from flash drive to new computers.

Flash drive is one option, same with external hard drive. Best approach depends on current OS and amount of data to be moved, which is why I asked.
If the total amount of data to be moved is < 5 GB, I would just use Onedrive.

You can just connect with ethernet cable and if you have a lot of stuff to transfer this will be fastest.
This *should* work, it's been a while since I did it. Connect the two computers directly with ethernet cable. On the computer you are transferring from go to C:\Users\ Right click <yourname> and select properties, then click the sharing tab and then the share button.
On the computer you are transferring too open This PC and down the bottom click Networks. If you get prompted for Network Discovery enable it. Once enabled you should be able to see the files on the other computer. Copy them to new computer.
Browser settings can eb exported and then imported on the other computer through various methods. If you are using an email client it's the same deal.
One thing to be aware of is regardless of method the data transfer rate can be slow. A bunch of small files take a whole lot longer than single file of same size.
That said if these files are important to you and these are the only copies I'd strongly suggest external drive which you can then use for backups.

One thing I like about using the flash drive is, after the transfer to the new compute, I can leave all those folders on the flash drive as a backup.Rob R. wrote: ↑Tue. Man I love my VM is all I have to say. Slam bam boom. Laptop dies pull out my backup of my virtual machine, slap it in a new machine, allocate ram and storage and back in business.

12 years is a long time for a battery to last. I think the laptop I use on a cord, its battery died in a year or two. Must be a dozen years on a cord now.
Bookmarks can sometimes be tricky. I wont give advice on how as I use Linux.
If you ever get a virus or other problem that just cant be fixed you can use a linux disc to get into the pute and retrieve all the pics. That Ive done and it works good. Hard drive has to be ok to do it. Some putes just arent worth paying someone to fix and then you can do that.

Wow,,,, I must be living under a rock. You fellows have me completely lost. 
I think I will just take it to Best Buy and buy a new laptop and see if they can transfer old to new without costing a arm and leg. Thanks for all the replays but I think it's over my head.

Theo, it's not that difficult. What I suggested is a little advanced but it's fast.
If you want simple and you have a bunch of personnel files in My Documents etc? On your old computer you Just copy them to USB stick, move the USB stick to new computer and copy them from the stick to new computer. Done!
If you want to move browser settings, favorites etc. that may require a little more doing but not too difficult either.
