Got our delivery - 7 1/2 tons of Blaschak. Same price as last year ($340). All in all, its gone up $8 in 9 years. Unfortunately the driver mentioned that our supplier may not be handling coal as of next year.

I am a dealer and have had 2 price increases from the mine already. I,am sure that there will be another maybe before years end. So if you haven't stocked up yet, get to it. The cost of NG has DOUBLED since spring and propane is up also. If you in Northern NJ I sell bagged coal only and can be reached @ 973-862-0079

I planned on ordering 6 ton rice for my garage. I was supposed to have already finished building another storage building. My supplier told me I should order ASAP because with everything going on he can’t commit to pricing for more than a few days. Said he’s not sure when or if there going to get slammed with environmental fees that ultimately get passed on to the consumer.

Picked up my first ton today. It was $270 last year. This year it’s $370. Going to be an expensive winter.

Where did you buy it? Or which state I guess is what I meant.

S&S heating in Arthur Illinois. I the state has added a dirty tax. I don’t think the increase is from the dealer. They seem very honest.

Fred, I think your coal dealer is ripping you off. First, NYS doesn't charge 8% sales tax. They are 4% sales tax and the rest is up to the County you live in (I get the info and updates because I've had a NYS sales tax account for decades because I have to charge sales tax as part of my business).

And NYS doesn't charge sale tax on heating fuels, including wood and coal (see list below). None of the several coal dealers I deal with many years have ever charged me any sales tax - both State or County. And that's for both bulk or bagged.

Some businesses say they are charging sales tax, but they pocket that extra money and never pass any on to the State.

Here's the NYS website explaining it.

https://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/publications/sales/pub718r.pdf

"The Tax Law provides that residential energy sources
and services are exempt from the 4% New York State
sales and use tax, and the ⅜% sales and use tax
imposed in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation
District (MCTD), if applicable. The term residential energy
sources and services means the following tangible
personal property and services used for residential
purposes:
• natural gas
• propane sold in containers of 100 pounds or more
• electricity
• steam
• gas, electric, and steam services
• fuel oil (except diesel motor fuel)
• coal
• wood (for heating purposes only) .............."

Fred, Did you purchase "bagged coal"?
I wonder if "bagged coal" is subject to sales tax?

The next paragraph in that document says:

Counties and cities that impose a local sales and use tax
may choose to either tax or exempt the residential energy
sources and services listed above.

Cortland does have a 4% tax listed for coal. If I am understanding this correctly Fred should have to pay the country 4% sales tax, but not any sales tax for NYS.

Correct. My county does not tax on any heating fuels.

But Fred said he is paying 8%.

No County in NYS charges 8%.

I purchased a couple 40 pound bags of Reading nut coal to try out coal burning for the first time. The supplier I went to was getting $6.20 per bag. He had rice coal in bulk for $260/ton and bituminous "house coal" for $150/ton. This is in Southwestern Pennsylvania between Pittsburgh and the Ohio state line. He said he doesn't think he will be able to get bituminous next year as all his suppliers for it have dried up but anthracite is plentiful.

I bought bagged coal today, $6.30/bag. next week he's raising it to $6.80. Might have to go back to wood next year.
