Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 30-95
Coal Size/Type: Anthracite/nut

Hello,
My Hitzer 30-95 has been running great since Saturday morning (my first coal fire). The next few days are going to be warm in Central NY, 50s during the day and low 40s at night. What do you all do when the weather warms up for a few days? Should I expect any difference in the burn with the warmer days? Should I let the fire go out until it gets colder? Turn the draft knob down to 1?

Thanks for any replies. I know it has only been two days but I am loving this little stove. It is keeping my 2000 sq ft basement around 70 degrees with the draft control on the back set at the half way mark.

Generally your going to lose draft, especially if the winds are calm. Turn it down but you have to watch how low you can go. Keep an eye on the mano and temp. This is part of the learning curve where you have to find how low you can hold a substantial fire.

Some additional over fire air to keep the chimney warm enough to draft...
Our 503 will go down to 200* easy and still draft fine...
We keep the stove going usually to May 15-25...

Im running my riteway below 150 all day yesterday, today and likely tomorrow. I just load and shake once a day and keep the air intake as low as it will go... 15ish pounds a day using just one grate, but if your 30/95 is completely closed that way it might go out. I use a paper clip over my intake door so its never 100% shut but there are other ways to do it too.

I also agree with both previous comments. Its a learning experience for you. Next year will be much easier. If you can keep a draft you can keep a fire.

I set my Clayton too low. Lost the draft and I believe it started venting out the baro. Filled the house with carbon monoxide while I was at work. Be careful going too low. Just opening a window to cool the house down would have been a better option for me. Instead of trying to run it on the edge.

Re-Starting this one FOR Winter >> I couldn't keep the Harmon Magna Fire Elite FirePlace Insert burning when the temperature got about 45 degrees.. So even though we're hitting freezing now at night in NC mountains, I haven't started the stove as it's still 60-65 in the daytime. I have a 15 foot corrugated SS Stove Pipe inside a masonry chimney liner with a cap on it. Extends about 1 ft above the roofline.
Should I ADD another 6 foot of Pipe to improve the Draft?
