Hi,
I just accidentally over fired my stove (Harman Insert). Like an idiot, I left the ash door open and walked away. I even have a system to prevent this, but it wasn't fool proof enough. I've got it under control now. I threw a bunch of coal in to smother it, closed the air intake, and put 2 box fans blowing on it. It's cooled it down significantly.
However, parts of the stove were glowing red. The little metal stove thermometer I have on top of it read around 850 degrees F (now down to 400). There are metal flakes that fell from the underneath of the baffle. Roughly 4" by 4".
Is it safe to continue using the stove? Or should I shut it completely down?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies. Once I have it shut all the way down, what am I looking for to determine if it's safe?

Look for cracks, doors open and close properly, paper test gaskets for door warpage, dampers and grate shakers work correctly. Unless it was for a long time I would think anything catastrophic happened.Optimistic wrote: ↑Tue. Mar. 02, 2021 1:39 pmThanks for the replies. Only 850? I'm guessing Corrosionman would call that just getting it started.

If the magnet still sticks on that thermometer...
Ya did not get hot enough!
Did that to my Hitzer 503 and was gone for5- 6 hours...
House was 95 and candles melted but no harm done to the stove...
Like they said above give it a good look-see after it has cooled...

Magnets on stoves are like a smoke alarm. You'll hear them when they hit the floor. Thats around 950-1000 degree's I think. Just before red. But OP said some parts were red so there could be damage. Any progress O?

Unfortunately she and the kids were the first ones in the house...Holdencoal wrote: ↑Thu. Mar. 04, 2021 7:33 pmHow fast did you run out and get the same yankee candies you melted before your wife saw and you changed your briefs?
Besides her Cuban half will always find out the real story...
Better to come clean and survive the fury...
The other half is Irish so I am doubly screwed...
No damage to the house and the stove was put back into service that night...
Warm house and no cold shoulder...
