I have an old Pot Belly Stove. I can get the coal to initially light and glow, but it dies out a short time later. Does anybody have any helpful hints? Maybe a draft inducer? It seems the chimney has some draft, I just don't know if its enough.

If you post some pictures of your stove and it's installation it will help us determine your problem.
Coal likes a deep bed in order to stay burning. The bed should be about 7 or 8" thick.

Thanks, I will get some pictures. I also read that a damper needs to be installed in the smoke pipe. I have the damper just haven't put it in yet.

You definitely need to install that manual pipe damper to achieve any control of your stove.

Put the reducer in the thimble and run 6" to it. The bigger pipe will reduce the gas speed.

Thank you C!!! That's a real nice lil stove A, you're complicatin this WAY to much. You'll love it once ya get her set up right. Many guys on here have YEARS of experience. KISS my friend. PS--welcome to the FORUM---a big plus 1 on the manual damper.
I might be relatively new to coal, but I do second the manual pipe damper and moving the reducer to the thimble. Also, as I have realized, coal loves a deep bed.
Have you checked to make sure that any cleanout doors on your chimney are closed fully? They can kill a draft in no time flat if they're open.
I have to ask, where is the door for your ash pan?
My only other question is, how are you going about lighting your stove?

Are you running the stove in direct or indirect mode?

The outlet of the stove is 5". I was only able to obtain 6" stove pipe so I used the reducer you see. The door for the ash pan is at the bottom of the stove which may not be visible in the picture because I was trying to capture the installation. Everything is working and I can control the draft with the damper. All the cleanout doors on the main chimney are closed. The main chimney has a typical 8" x 8" clay flue liner. There is more than sufficient draft. We even opened the ash door and put some fan induced air under the coal bed after she was burning and glowing bright orange. She will burn for a short time, and then ultimately goes out. We have tried both nut and stove coal sized but neither have continued to burn. We are almost ready to give up, unless you guys can come up with some ideas. What is the ideal draft situation and should i create a deeper bed of coal. We don't go smaller than nut coal because it will fall through the grate. I thought Pot Bellies were famous effective stoves? Where am I going wrong? Help! LOL Thanks Guys!

It sounds like you don't have a deep enough coal bed..
You should be filled about even with the middle trim ring on the stove.
Once you have the coal glowing, continue to add layers until it is at least up to that trim ring.

You have good draft, yet the coal goes out. Look for places that are stealing that draft. Anything that leaks air into the stove above the fire pot, like a leaky air shutter or unsealed seams.

I have a question, you say a short while after glowing and it goes out, when it goes out is it unburnt coal left or ash? Also what is a short while? Are you leaving a small air supply for under the fire?

5" outlet but you could only find a 6". So did you just set the 6" on top of the outlet? I don't understand.
