I have been looking t replace my $50 Crane 404 for some time because it has a cracked firepot. I wanted an 80,000+ btu stove, preferably with a hopper and bimetallic draft control, as well as a viewing window in the door. This limited my choices. I had a couple shots at 50-93s and DS circulators, but it never worked out to snag one. Well the Crane dropped a big chunk out of the firepot a few weeks ago and had to be decommissioned. Now the search was on in earnest. I started looking at Alaska Kodiak hand Fired stoves. They had options for everything I wanted and could be bought for half the price of the Hitzer or the DS models. Last week I found a HF about an hour and a half from home. No hopper, no draft control, but it does have the glass. Contacted the man with some questions and he told me the stove was at his cabin and he was going to pick it up and take it home on Saturday. I asked where his cabin was. Its about 30 min from my house! I met him there on Saturday morning after driving back a 1 mile unplowed camp road (10" of snow) with only one other set of tracks. Glad my new F250 flatbed is 4wd! He was asking $300 for the stave and since he didn't have to move it took $250. Crane out Kodiak in and fired by 1500. Been running ever since.

The over fire air passages molded into the front fire brick actually work!

I don't think I'm worried about a hopper. I can put at least a bucket and a half of nut coal in without the hopper. I am going to purchase the auto draft kit from Alaska. The stove has all the cutouts and holes plated off, so it will be an easy install. $125 well spent for that add on, I think.
More to come as I get this tuned in and add the draft control.

Thermostat first, then hopper. This stove is getting expensive already! $250 + 125 + 200 = $575...lol

$575. / 15 years = $38.50 a year. A cheap investment.

After 14 hours yesterday without tending. Shake, add a bucket of nut, ash door open. Took a long time to come back; also smelled some coal gas. Nothing on the CO meter, digital, read 0. After last night 10 hours, shake, add 1/2 bucket, door open for 5 min, no issues. I believe I added more coal than I should have in the first instance. Maybe I will order up that hopper after all...

Remove ashes, shake and add to hopper...
Keeps the fire steady if you don't let the hopper run real low...
