Howdy folks.

I need to hook up a stove in the basement and I have a port in the masonry chimney upstairs I need to seal. I’m looking for suggestions. Never done it.

It was sealed before and I opened it up late last winter to bring a stove upstairs. They just had plaster over it so it’s probably a good thing I opened it back up because I’m not sure I like just plaster sealing it. However, I know nothing about it so maybe that’s acceptable.

At any rate I’m open to ideas.

Thanks

How permanently do you want to seal it?

No problem if ya use sakrete over it--a lil tappin with a hammer will loosen it up& remove crete if needed. In the meantime, she'll be air tight.

Looking at the picture you posted. I would just run a bead of high temp black silicone or furnace cement around the edge of the cap and hang decorative cover over it for future use.

In the olden days people used to paint things on the covers for decoration, or hang a store bought cover that hung over it to hide it. Or you can hang a picture of whatever over the cover if you are worried about looks. Anyway, here are some examples of what Im talking about for flue covers if you want an antique look on the spot. https://www.ebay.com/sch/4043/i.html?_from=R40&_n ... flue+cover

Yeh I remember my parents house had one with a winter cabin scene on it.

Problem is my port is a clay tile and the diameter is slightly larger then the cap. It’s just sitting loose in there at the moment. It wouldn’t take much to blow it out.

Maybe I should stuff it with chicken wire and then cover it with cement.

I opened it up last year when I needed a stove upstairs and it had some kind of fabric stuffed in it with the plaster over that. I think it must have been some form of asbestos. Otherwise it’s a nice port.

I just missed a deal on a Glenwood cookstove for $350. I was the second caller. They said it was mine if the first passed. Oh how I prayed they passed but they didn’t. It was a beauty too. If I had gotten it I’d be using that port for it as it’s in the kitchen and I’d be running class A from the basement to the roof.

I guess it’s a blessing that I didn’t get it because I really can’t afford it right now. I’ve only worked 7 months this year due to covid crap. A bag of sakrete is much cheaper.

I just packed mine with fiberglass insulation, then I put a flu cover over mine. Easy Peasy, also if I decide to put a cookstove in, all I have to do is take the flu cover off and pull the insulation out, and I'm good to go. And yes I had two appliances in one chimney at one time, and never had a problem.

I just put a few beads of stove cement around a short run of pipe and pushed that in. I then fastened a cap on the end of that and put a screw in the side. All I have to do is remove the cap and I can hook up to it.
