Haha good luck! They checked my temperature when I serviced the hospital kitchen yesterday. I'm cool as cucumber at 97.7 degrees :)

So I averaged my coal/ash ratio for the last 16 days to get 17.5%.. I also leveled the bin, dumped ash and dropped the anthrastat to 130 degrees (was 142). I'll run it this way for a while and re check results. There is a little bit of coal in the ash and a lot of black sand. I'd love to see it back down around 11-12% again.

Since the snow is gone I'm not using the sled to drag my ash to the dump site. Instead, I've recruited this cool wagon

About this time of the heating season I hand pick my ash/klinker reserve to be held over for starting fire on top of in the next heating season...

I'm just curious, what the standards are for this selection process?

Sized there about more or less to that of a small chicken egg...deffinetly no powder...as it makes its own powder from handeling. I store in covered plastic 5 gal bucket(s) and use a split stove pipe curled into a chute/funnel to load through fire view port onto the rolling grate.

Do you actually remove the ash at the end of the season? When I shut down, I just leave it and it's primed for next years start. When I bought mine it had been sitting unused for 27 year full of ash. The grate appeared to be brand new and still had the welder's chalkmarks on it.

I would say like so many things with burning coal...plenty things are not a "one size fits all"...the amount of moisture within each boiler environment/location can give drastically different results when leaving ashes between heating seasons. Use prudent decision making to suit ones unique boiler environment.

Right.. I'll be cleaning my AA up to the best of my ability and coating any bare metal with something. My basement is wet, damp and humid from the time the fire goes out till lit again in the fall..

So I did this today :) Installed a thermostat upstairs to control this zone valve. This was my first experience with a zone valve. Pretty neat little critter lol
That's one small step for Man,
one giant leap for Lightning kind
Trying to throttle the heat upstairs with the manual valve got tiresome...

Yeah, remote LED, or maybe a clock/hour-meter for cycle run data collection...
