I have absolutely no “stove” control bought a 1357

It’s really not that high. In fact after I get the second row of firebrick in there will only be a few inches between coal and secondary burner. I’m worried maybe it’s too close.

I think this firebox is much shorter then the Clayton. I saw some other pictures of one and that thing is monstrous.

Yeah, yours had the single shaker grate, right? The Clayton had two of the same grates in line, so probably almost twice the length. I think you'll be really happy with your modified stove and deep fire bed. I would suggest a nut/stove size coal mix for it. The flat grate with the riddler I thought was a huge improvement for me

Yes just a single grate. It’s actually a pretty small stove. There’s going to be a lot going on in there by the time I get done. Once I get the dhw coil in there won’t be much room for coal...lol.

Here’s were I’ll put the overfire air burner. Just need to plumb the air up from the primary to it. I’ll try that method first. If it isn’t successful I’ll plumb it through to the outside of the stove and see if that’s what it needs.

I wish Rural King sold coal.

I get it at viper coal mine in Williamsville Illinois. It’s about $70 a ton. Stove coal is all they have.

Yeh the dump trailer is handy. That’s about 3500 pounds on it right there.

Made some more headway today.
Finally got a wood fire going. I’m afraid I wasn’t able to install the dhw loop yet. I’m still not healed up enough from surgery to break these 50 yo water lines apart. I’ll have to hold off for a while longer unfortunately.

The secondary air is working well with wood. I’ll try coal tomorrow.

I wasn’t ready to commit to cutting a hole in the door. I cut some mica and slid them in between the galvanized plate on the door and the door. Seems to work well. I don’t think I’ll get very good pics as the mica is tinted. I can view ok though.

The house is 71. It’s 35 outside. So I’m a bit worried that the stove is too small. Maybe I’ll get better results once I get it stuffed with coal.

Update: I couldn’t wait. I loaded her up with coal. This thing burned through two arm loads of wood in an hour so, on to coal....

does everyone open the secondary burn tubes when burning wood all the way or just half open or how??

I can’t be of much help. That is the first time I’ve burned with secondaries. I have no choice but to have it all the way open as I just have a 1” pipe thread cap I am using to close the secondaries. I will be making an adjustable cap soon. I was just too anxious to start the stove.

Well the shake down went well. The riddle method is fairly painless. I don’t know what the stock grates are like but the flat grate definitely lets plenty of air through.

Loading is somewhat challenging. The door isn’t the best design. There isn’t a lot of room in the box due to the baffle. The bbq burner I have hanging on it is another obstacle.
I think I’ll make a chute. I’ve noticed others using them.

I am really enjoying the heatwave we are having. Looks like it is going to hit 60* soon. I could take about 4 more months of this. I’ll be exited to see how the stove performs when the cold does comeback.

Not sure what happened here. It’s dead calm outside but completely foggy. I’m not sure why my draft is so nutty.

Mano port was covered with soot. Cleaned now it’s fine.
