If you are referring to that intense look they give, yes that is normal.

No, I think the dog is a bit off. He isnt very interested in being with people. Hides a lot, wont respond unless you express anger. He seems a bit odd. I'll feed him bits of bacon sometimes and if I toss a piece to him he will run from it. And I do not trust him around small children, he growls at them. He has never bitten anyone but his behaviour is not dog like as I know it.

He seems frightened. Perhaps abused as a puppy. Patience and time can work to overcome that fear.

CS, I've got a yellow lab like you describe--fine with me after a couple yrs but does NOT do well with strangers--runs, hides, growls--like Richard said, this one was real abused as a puppy. She loves runnin with the horses--Get that pup a cow, that's what they do!! When kids & grandkids visit it takes her a while to warm up but the kids learned patience growin up with all sorts of critters. I refer to this one as my challenged lil girl.

The man in my life is 14 years old.
He has turned into grumpy old man of the most lovable sort. If I lay in bed longer than he thinks I should, he starts grumbling at me. He still thinks he can speak human. He starts by clearing his throat several times and if that doesn't get a response, he starts verbalizing getting progressively loader and longer until it almost becomes a Galaahhwwooah. He is letting me know that he is ready to go outside. He has the face of a Precious Moments character,so he is hard to ignore.
Lovable and kind he has been my companion for a long.

We are raising our 4 year old granddaughter. It's amazing how gentle he is with her. It's like he knows to be careful not to hurt her by accident. They play together, she'll climb all over him while he's laying down and he don't care a bit.
He's recently become very territorial and protective. The neighbor's dogs come into our yard occasionally and he used to allow it, now he runs them off. And with our granddaughter, he'll get between her and someone he's not familiar with when we have company. He has a very authoritative bark. He enjoys being with his family like we're part of his pack, which is how he sees us, I believe.
As a puppy he slept a lot and wasn't very rambunctious, he had his puppy moments but a lot calmer than most. He's very fast when really opens up, 10 foot stride, and he's quite a challenge even for me with a game of tug of war lol.
His tail is bit of a hazard though. When we come home after being out, he's happy to see us and shows it by greeting us at the door, his long tail whipping to and fro. Our granddaughter sometimes gets clocked upside her head with painful reaction. It'll clear off a coffee table too
Wonderful dog.. unfortunately they have a very short life span. From what I've read, at most 10 years or as short as 6 depending on genetics.
