I have a Home Comfort range that I am restoring, actually 2, as one is a doner. My problem is that it is the sheet metal skin with enamel in white. Between the outside and the inside there are sheets of asbestos insulation that has deterioratd a lot. some of the is actually exposed to flame particularly at the smoke exit at the top. I am wondering if there is a replacement material for this as of course one can't buy asbestos. The material would have to be in sheets about a quarter of an inch thick. Of course this is a nice feature as it contains the heat somewhat for use in the summer. If it wasn't raining so hard, I would take some pictures but maybe I can in the morning.

I know that in the steel mills we used a product called Kaowool but I'm not positive that it came in hard sheets.

I'm curious to know if you ever found a good substitute for the asbestos board. I recently got a round oak chief cookstove that needs a serious rebuild and has the asbestos board lining the oven box. Its a project I won't get to for awhile but Id like to know what to look for when the time comes. Thanks!

There is no good replacement for asbestos, it is in a class by itself (in more ways than one). There is a number of products out there that can do the job. Just not as good as asbestos.

Possibly you can find an old furnace or stove and rob its asbestos. just dampen it slightly while handling and its harmless. There will likely be tiny amounts in the stove too so do it outside on the upwind side. one dose wont hurt you. Its repeated exposure thats bad. Like mechanics that did a lot of brake work when they were made of it, or living in a building for years with it crumbling, etc. An old mechanic shop may still have sheets of it they would be glad to get rid of, unless they still use it.

Ill disagree with the no good replacement for asbestos... There are numerous mineral wools out there and ceramics... the stuff they make those metal panels you can set stoves on are cored with a nice ceramic board...

How thick do you need? I have a friend in the HVAC business and he give me panels/material that is heatproof that might work as a substitute.

You can get ceramic board, it comes in low density and high density. The low density is a better insulator but not as durable as the high density. A lot of wood and coal stoves use the high density as baffles in the top of the stoves. It is good to 2300 degrees. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for the information. Lewiston is not too far from me, so that's good to know. It will be quite a while before I get to the stove rebuild, I have to rebuild the kitchen first. When the time comes I'll make sure to share some pictures.

A heating wholesaler or retailer should be able to help you out.
