Just meaning does the dust separate when the coal flies into the barrel? I was thinking possibly of setting it up like the shop vac, putting a tab for the debris to hit as soon as it gets inside to make like a splash?

Oh... Yes, I have very, very little dust in the coal going to the hopper and barrel but the dust deputy gets filled up twice a year and I use 3 or 4 filter bags each year.

Start out with the bags and see how it goes... Mine turn black pretty quick and are good for up to 2 tons vacuumed up.

Did it. Works. Not really worth the time, honestly. You get a bunch of extra pieces in the Dust Deputy kit. The lid and extra hose are very helpful. The black Home Cheapo lid has now cracked and I have to keep the cracks plugged or lose suction. Have to run two homer buckets stacked together on the home made Dust collector otherwise it will implode one Homer bucket.
For filters in the shop vacs I run a HEPA filter in each one. Then I run the paper collection bag attached to the inlet. I bought all Craftsman stuff originally. Now ALL Sears stores in my area are gone.

I really need to plumb the "y" in! Maybe today. But yesterday I added a new Rigid 6hp vac . Home Depot had a sale and it came with filter bags which I have never used. So after cleaning up my Dust Deputy I hooked this vac up to it. Curious to see how much coal dust it traps.
The reason for a new vac is I had taken the other Craftsman one from my woodworking shop so I have been without one for clean up.
But I must say it is much easier to fill the hopper and it is kinda fun!
