Blaschak coal co. announced that they are starting a new surface mine project near Mt. Carmel. They received a grant and began investing in the site. Not sure exactly where, but the coal is mammoth vein. The article stated a very large reserve.

My understanding is that the vein pinched off, but I could be wrong.

I was told the vein they were mining kept getting smaller and smaller until it wasn't worth continuing.

Drives me crazy when a company the size of Blaschak gets a """ GRANT """. It's not a Grant, it's MY MONEY and YOUR MONEY!! They can well afford to use their OWN MONEY for this. Sorry but this grant word really strikes a nerve. Wish they'd call it what it is.

hophead, Please keep in mind that the grant money that Blaschak has been awarded is part of a much larger amount of state grant money that is set aside every year to be awarded to a wide range of businesses and industries in PA. The money will be given/spent whether it would be awarded to Blaschak or not. In order to receive the grant Blaschak had and has to prove the economic benefit to the community and to the state which is already underway by adding various positions to a job that will require a workforce of 20 to 30+. While the grant money from the state is greatly appreciated it is a small part of the overall money that has been and will be spent in the preparation, mining and reclamation of this job and again is greatly appreciated and needed in an area that desperately needs the economic benefits that any such grant offers.

Well put and true, but it's the word grant that rubs the nerve. From what I've heard thru the always questionable grapevine is that a small ocean of coal lies under that tract. Let's be honest and tell us if it wouldn't have happened without OUR money chipped in.

PS How about one of those jobs. I'm sure one of the fellows here could use one.

hophead, Yes it would have happened with our without the money chipped in but since the money is made available and since the money is going to be allocated somewhere there is no reason that the money shouldn't be allocated to an area that could use the economic assistance. We have already received many applications for various skilled positions and have already begun increasing the Blaschak workforce to assist with this operation as well as other open positions within the company. This is an estimated 20 year project. Not sure if I would call that a small ocean of coal or not but we are hopeful that the project will not just benefit the company, the community but also our industry.

I'm going to wrap up my big mouth with this last post. I don't like the word grant or giving out my money just to use it up. I think it should go to the many small businesses who may actually NEED it and if they don't, GIVE IT BACK. This whole thing stinks worse than a dead fish under your car seat in the middle of summer. Just my opinion though. Done.
