Plan on starting the stove back up on friday after work. I'll report back with results late Friday or Saturday morning.

Yep the crown stops the water from beating up the chimney.

You want the water to run off the top to the outside in the winter. Otherwise it will get between the flue and the block and freeze. That will slowly dismantle a chimney.

Is there a cleanout door at the bottom of the chimney? If so make sure its tight and not sucking air through it. 27' should draft well.

I have the same problem although not as severe. My chimney is at least 34Ft high NO CAP. Anything above 60 degree outside I start losing draft . 70 and the draft is almost non existent. Good thing I have no desire to run all summer for hot water. I feel its my stoker Keystoker K-2 that is too restrictive and not open to natural draft ,needs to be forced ,although the rice coal I get is pretty fine so could be restricting air movement. I have no problem when I hook up a woods stove or oil boiler to the same flue system.

Insulated chimneys do draft better and are recommended for wood stoves to alleviate creosote formation but they do provide stronger draft with any type of stove. My tall brick outside chimney is NOT insulated so may be a factor in losing draft in warmer weather.

Does your 27' chimney go up the inside of the house, or along the outside of the house? Either way, perhaps it needs to be insulated.

You can also try opening a window near the stove on warm days and see if the draft increases at all when the window is open.

Insulate?? NOBODY in this area has ever had to insulate a block chimney! Do be sure to check for a clean out door & make sure it's tight. I'm bettin without the cap, you're gonna notice a BIG
difference. Top of chimney work---springs a-comin!! :)

This summer I will be working on a "draft stabilizer" that if successful will alleviate the draft problems during warm weather, stay tuned...

There is. It's stuffed with insulation.

Update: Started the stove back up today and shes seems to be sucking pretty good based on how much the baro is open, although it is cold and shes running pretty hot since the house was cold.

The real test looks like it wont be until next weekend when temps get into the 40's again.

Quite shortly here, if it pans out, I'm gonna have a draft problem burning coal during the summer so, I have some ideas. I'll post more about it once I have a working prototype ;)

Make sure any horizontal runs don't have a pile of ash in them. They usually do at this end of the heating season. That will kill a draft.
