Thanks, corey.
Did you ever try mixing wood and bit to get more heat?
I use a little bit of wood.
Mostly, to start a fire or if I let the coals die down too much.
I also use a piece every day or so to burn up the stuff that's not quite burned up to give me a more complete burn up of the stuff and give me a more powdery ash.

One of the things I've learned during this epic saga is that a hotter fire doesn't always make a warmer house.
I don't understand why.
I was able to get readings of 700-800 over the door and still froze in the house

That’s crazy. I do not have a way to read my stove temp just my stove pipe which is located about 4-5 away from the stove. I’m just burning wood today and it’s around 300 on the pipe and it is running me out of the house. I have some stove size pieces of anthracite mixed in to make it last a little longer but it puts out good heat.

I have about 3/4 cord cut and dried.
I may cut a little more and put in my "kiln" for faster drying.

It's not too cheap to buy around here which is kind of crazy.
It's usually not dry enough to use.

What I have now is poplar.
Burns hot but fast.

I don't have a whole lot of wood on my property.
I try to spread my cutting out

Makes sense where are you located? Wood is pretty easy to get around here, I got 3 cords for free people had trees removed and wanted to get rid of the wood. I bought 1 cord of slab wood which is good mixing in with the hard stuff to keep the fire hot. I actually got all my coal for free to but would never want to move that much coal by hand again.

I live north east of Pittsburgh and have trees everywhere.
Just not mine.
The first year I bough a pick up load of "seasoned" wood for $90 that I couldn't use until the following season

That sucks. Craigslist and Facebook market place is where I found all mine. Even found the coal there. People would rather have someone do the work for them now a days and splitting wood is a lot of work lol. Around here everyone uses gas for heat. A lot still burn wood but most buy it.

I have a couple chain saws and bought a 5 ton Harbor Freight electric splitter last summer which works great.
I have a couple trees down that I need to get cut up.

I learned how to make a "drying kiln" which dries them pretty fast.
Because I was having so much fun with the splitter, I split a lot of the wood a little to small.
:(

Haha that’s awesome. I’ll have to look into that splitter I used a maul to do all mine and I didn’t have any fun. How much did it run you?

I had a coupon.
Net $230 delivered.
The store wouldn't honor the coupon but online did

When I was younger I split plenty with a maul.
My wedges are 50 years old

That’s a really good price. I grew up using a splitter my granddad had my dad would borrow and just started doing it by hand when we moved Into our current house 3 years ago. It’s a good workout for sure. I will have to look into the hf splitter. I have a lot of trees on my property and they all need to either get trimmed up or taken down so I have a couple years left of wood.

I'm pretty happy with mine.
My daughter and I split 3/4 cord in less than 2 hours just fooling around

I don't know if it's supposed to do it but I found a way to jam the button so it continuously cycles.
Saved some time

Has anyone used a product similar to this?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001MX9HRQ/ref=sspa_dk_ ... il_2?psc=1

I'm wondering if this may help reduce my soot build up.
There are no reviews and little product info.

By the way, it's hit 12 degrees and I haven't frozen.
Something must be better.

I'm still unsure of damper adjustments for the best heat.

Usually, I leave the primary air open 4 turns and seldom change that.
Secondary from all the way open to, on occasion, 1/2 closed.
MPD, I can't close much more than 1/3 before I get smoke
