Lol I think we need to get Larry a hand fired baseburner that he can put in his basement, heat every room in his house, his garage, and his dhw to get a fair comparison!
Oh wait.... impossible..

You gotta weigh the ash vs the coal used. I averaged roughly 15%. Given coal is 10% ash I probably lose 5% unburned. And of course there is play room there, the coal I used could have been 12% ash due to not having the specs for it.
This year with the Lehigh I should be able to determine a fairly accurate coal loss in ashes.
I'm sure an antique stove loses even less.

Who cares?hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Sun. Nov. 05, 2017 2:21 pmScalable what kind of data do you have on the coldest days of winter? How much coal you burned? What each and every room temperature is? Stack temperature?
What does that have to do with the question we were discussing WRT efficiency @ idle?
The simple fact is a stoker uses coal JUST to stay running while not delivering any usable heat. Forget about warm dry basements, thats another issue that needs to be addressed. Larry admitted it, Rob uses 15 lbs a day just to keep 800 pounds of steel hot.
What are you missing?

Why do u think we aren’t heating? We in fact are heating. Because the stokers are radiating heat into the homes.scalabro wrote: ↑Sun. Nov. 05, 2017 2:30 pmWho cares?hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Sun. Not on less coal per BTU delivered than a Baseburner could.hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Sun. Nov. 05, 2017 2:36 pmWhy do u think we aren’t heating? We in fact are heating. Because the stokers are radiating heat into the homes.scalabro wrote: ↑Sun. Nov. 05, 2017 2:30 pm

To be fair, the 800 lbs of steel does a hell of a job heating the surrounding space...but if heat in the space is not desirable, much of it is wasted.
In my case the basement often gets warmer than I need in the winter. In theory I would probably burn less coal if the boiler was in the living room (higher heat load) and I had a zone in the basement, rather than the way it is now. We will never know, because I don't think the decorating committee will sign off on that.

I have to chime in. My 1908 G109 base burner burns every last ounce of coal on idle or wide open. During peak I'm seeing almost 4/1 stove/stack temps. I do have it idling extremely low through the warm days. Stove/stack temps read around 130/100. It sips coal! Proof is in the pudding...damn efficient to me!

I was just telling my wife about how passionate we all can be about our different heating appliances. Her input was that her and I should go into business selling coal themed thong underwear and negligee, and baseball caps with high heels to go with it lol.

Put me down for a medium, just as long as it's antique base burner related...hahaLightning wrote: ↑Sun. That doesn’t matte as much as coal consumption apparently.tcalo wrote: ↑Sun. Nov. 05, 2017 2:46 pmI have to chime in. My 1908 G109 base burner burns every last ounce of coal on idle or wide open.
