Sounds like back in the day when you register you daily driver for the demolition derby. Maybe send the family to the mall and keep any firefighting equipment close at hand. Take plenty of pictures for forum archive and keep the C.O. detector hand. This is sounding like a planned train wreck and I will look through my fingers. If this works I'm going back to grilling hot dogs in my toaster!
I forgot to mention, best of luck!
This is hilarious!! Thanks for that vote of confidence!!

Not sure on NEPA location (assume NE PA!!) Anyway - I'm west of Binghamton, NY about 1-1/2 hrs so it's a little expensive. 240/280 ton. I will do some shopping and firefighting this weekend!!

Think you could set up a video camera for this "test" you are planning. Might be worth a half million or so youtube hits if things go right... errr I mean wrong

Seriously though please keep us rock burners posted on your "test". :D

Heck, if you want to really be brave, oil the coal too. I AM JOKING!

It might work, but even if it does, it wouldnt be very practical long term. Personally, I wouldn't try it. i'd invest in a few electric heaters instead, or even a cheap, used, vented, oil space heater. Craiglist has plenty of those. Rub your hands together. More sex. Hot coffee. Whiskey. Get a few dogs to keep you warm. Anything to make heat is better then wrecking your stove/house.

But yes, please put your experiment on webcam so we can watch it until the heat devours the cam. :D

Stop discouraging the guy. I want to see how this works! :!: Remember Dave Barry demonstrating blazing pop-tarts in a toaster? Who could not cheer for him?

My guess is, there will be some problem with air flow and the coal won't ignite or won't keep burning. Might damage the burn pot, but might not, after all a wood fire is pretty hot too. Can't see that it would damage anything else unless the feed auger jams -- the stove should be able to dissipate whatever heat is produced. But damn, the only way to find out is to try it.

Give it a whirl ,just call your local fire dept. & have them come to your house as a standby for a test burn, its only a pellet stove after all, you can then buy a coal burner for the rest of this season,& you will be all set up for next yr........ if you still have a house to put it in  remember, insurance won't pay for willful ignorance .

All you guys that have burned stoker stoves can just imagine how this will turn out.

1. Put the stoker starter bomb in the bottom of the burn pot.
2. Cover it with rice coal.
3. Light the stoker bomb and slam the door.
4. *censored* your pants when the bomb lights and fills the stove with smoke.
5. Turn on the combustion blower and *censored* your pants again as the smoke comes out of every crack in the stove.
6. If you've survived up to this point, watch as the burn pot starts to glow red then yellow.
7. *censored* you pants again and run to the kids sand box and hope the sand isn't frozen. If frozen,
throw the cat's litter pan on the burn pot and open all the windows.
8. Enter the video in "Worlds Funniest Videos" and win $10,000

Any questions.

TSB,You've missed Your Calling !.......That was a Beautiful Play By Play Calling of the Catastrophic Chain Of Events That Would Occur! I think the whole Debacle could be sponsored by Depends Under Garments :...."Burning Rice Coal In Your Pellet-Burner? Feel Safe? It Depends ! This Autopsy Brought To You By The Fine Folks At Depends Under Garments-We'll Help You Carry The Load !" I can't believe this made it to page 2. This has got to be a plant. Please don't bring this type of a blatant and dangerous idea here again just to see if we're ignorant enough to sanction it. Burn Pellets Only,Or Else.... :flush:

Biggest difference I see between coal and a pellet stove is, the coal stove blows fresh air into the burning coal mass. (all clean air), where the pellet stove draws the dirty combustion gases thru the (dirty) fan and then pushes the exhaust up a 4" stove pipe.

The feed rate would be way too fast even at the lowest setting so you would need to figure out a way to reduce it.

I had a pellet stove years ago but never thought to try coal in it...if I still had that stove, I would try coal in it

I agree with rberq...I say go for it.

Just watch it closely and be ready to pull the plug.
