The old unit I have in surgery has no stack damper. Just the notches in the cast iron stack-connection bit. I have no problem making a new one - but I'd like to get as close to 'right' the first time.
How loose does it have to be? That is; how much smaller than that the breeching opening should it be? I would like to end up with it closed after the coal fire is established.
As a percentage of full open - how 'open' should it be when it's closed?
Any ideas?
Someone here much have seen their own at some point, eh? At installation, stack repair, cleaning, etc. How loose / tight was it in it's opening?
Stack / breeching damper design

No one is going to stick their neck out, as every chimney / situation is assumed different.

Give you advice that could result in carbon monoxide poisoning.
My Chubby JR stove came with a factory installed stack damper, I will see if I can get a picture of it for you.

Thank you.
That looks exactly like the 6" round damper I installed in the flue connection stub when I built my last wood stove.
I just came inside from trying to haul That heavy monster up and out the Bilco doors. Oh course my Tacoma was Not Having It! <g> So I'll have to build a tripod or something tomorrow and then pick up the wood stove with a come-along or a chainfall.
I'm just going to scrap the wood stove so maybe I can borrow that damper back out of it and cut it down to the 3 by 7 oval this little water heater needs.
I dug out a small circ. pump and then dragged a 16 section cast iron radiator home this morning - so It's moving along. <g>
Thanks again for the picture.
