Hitzer 55- Hole burnned though top

I'm posting this for my father.

He has a Hitzer 55 he purchased In 2013 and has been burning bituminous coal.

While cleaning in preparation for this year a hole/ crack has burned thought the top of the stove.

Would Hitzer help in repair even though it's past the 5 year warranty?

Would this be caused by the sulfer content of the coal or a defective part?

If not warranted the price for the replacement part from Hitzer will be reasonable. Give them a call.

I would think overheating the top because of how bit is, but if he had something sitting there like a pan of water, that could have helped do it too. I doubt defective as it was just a sheet of steel.

As Rob said, call them. All their parts are reasonably priced. Worse case you could screw a piece of steel over the area that is damaged.

The stove is designed to radiate lots of heat. As such it is made with thinner outer sheet metal, and heavier metal where it counts most. The tops are made to be replaced by the user and at exceptionally reasonable prices.

With their other hand fed stoves (30-95, 50-92, 254/354, and stoker stoves) the tops are only replaceable via the factory and likely at that point you'd have to buy a new stove.

$41-$70 to fix it depending on parts you need.

Thanks for all the replies and helpfull information.

I'm pretty sure I figured out why my dad has burnt the hole.

He apparently has been burning a bunch of plastic...The stoves are not designed for that and honestly if I knew he was doing that in the first place I never would have posted this here.

I personally run a 50-93, (which I love by the way and is my no power back up).

Truth be told, I don't think my father will stop buring plastic, which is a shame cause it is a very nice stove if used properly.

I think he is going to just screw a pice of steel on top, which was better then his original plan of just a heavy pot and loose pice of metal...I did try and convince as nice as I could that was a horrible idea, not to mention life threatening, ie co2.

He lives 3 hrs away so I'll have to call and figure out what he did and I'll update.

Theres a member here with an 82 model that burns all his garbage in his stove. He shall remain nameless unless he wants to admit it again, lol

Sure, why not. I mean if I was a wood burner I'd stuff all my garbage in there too! 😄

I could burn all the plastic I want in my 50-93 but it's solid cast.

The hitzer 55 is solid and heavy where it needs to be. The top is not, it is a thiner piece of sheet steel, cause their no need for it to be thicker, providing you use it as directed.

I burn lots of my trash in a burn barel out side after a year or two the steel burns through. The fact he has been doing this since 2013 is a strong testament to the stove itself.

As per the update has has attached a new piece of steel to the top with self tapers and sealed it up with the high temperature culking ( can't remember the name). Should be safe from co2.

I picked up a DS stove that people had been burning trash in. It was pretty warped on the back. No idea why they would do that.

I have a 503 that doesn't have lots of use and I know the hopper is getting thin. I will need to address that next off season.
