So this spring summer, im tearing everything down and cleaning my little heat baby up with my daughter as a fun project to do together since her mother took off on me. luckily i was granted 50 50 custody so since we are stuck with this house she wanted i decided to dedicate the whole thing to her and were going to spend the next few years doing all sorts of fun things. first on the agenda is the boiler since she is vital to keep us warm. my harman has a sagging grate that i just noticed that i will need to replace. is it worth doing them all? or just problem child ones? next the bricks are horizontal and often have hot coals right up against the coal jacket, i replaced a few bricks with tractor supply third party bricks but they were so hard to get into the metal holding brackets. ive read about placing them vertically which to me seems smarter, but will the weight of more coal cause issue with the shaker arm? the sagging grate is causing the lower arm assembly to rub against the arm of the shaker and it gets stuck and i literally had to reweld it together after kicking it to hard to break it free. i will post up some pictures when i have more free time but just looking to see if anyone else had success or if i need to order directly from harman for these bricks, or angle grind the brick brackets off from the wall of the jacket

I used standard bricks from stove store and just used a blob of furnace cement on the back so they would stick to the metal. I made sure to wet the brick and metal before installing. I don't remember any clearance issues, but maybe my holders were already gone but it was only 3 years old when I moved in...

Okay got you I got some pretty good input from another fella I wanted to get on sooner but it went from hot to cold again so I had to fire it right back up before I could start tearing everything down I'll post some pictures to show what I'm talking about

but basically as you can see the way this stove initially was horizontal fire brick and it's held in with a small metal bracket that I don't really want to dremel off but I will if I have to I don't think it's a good idea to have hot coals right up against the water jacket. but when it gets warm again permanently I'll start tearing her down and post some side by side pictures of the grates. First thing I do though before that is line them up measure them and make sure you know the bad ones are taken care of

Looks like I have four warped grates so this summer is going to get a little pricey in repairs not to mention I have to modify either the brick or the brick brackets so I can run the brick horizontally instead of vertically.

I just used a grinder to make clearances on everything that rubbed on my DS stove grates. It worked. One is so bowed that it will drop some coal if I strike the grates too far so I just do short strokes and poke a little more.
On my harman I did buy new grates for it. I bought the stove used of course and the grates were more then I paid for the stove. Kind of spendy but sure looks better.

Sorry let me rephrase that the break is horizontal I want to run it vertically for a higher bed depthSylvesterd101 wrote: ↑Tue. Will do I'll keep you guys updated on the redo with pictures my four replacement grades come today and I just noticed that one or two of my great holders that sit on the side are slightly bent downwards so they must have worked as well whether or not I have to replace them I'll have to do a test fit and see.

I'm a bit nervous of grinding off the brick brackets with a corded grinder, might try a battery one as not to loose fingers

More. Rewelded broken flapper. Gonna pull the bricks out again and grind the brackets down till everything is flush. Hopefully I don't puncture the water jacket
