Vents on the load door are for secondary combustion air. This air helps aid the combustion of hydrocarbons early in the burn of a fresh batch of coal.

I'm thankful that there is a coalpit forum.Burning coal is an art. Is there anything else I should know. I've learned a lot along the way.

Is there a reliable coal company that has good quality coal. I have recently bought 3 pallets of nut coal that was really dirty in the last 3rd of the bag.I contacted the coal company , they said they would like to help me out. I never heard from them again. I never had this problem before this year. I think the loader operator was digging in the ground or the screen operator was a sleep. There should be some kind of quality control. It may not mean much to the coal company ,but when your trying to heat the house and it's not burning properly,it means something to me

Same here! I love coal lol. If it wasn't for the forum I'd probably be a wood slave.
My personal opinion is that Lehigh is the best but there are many others that are great also.
Fines are certainly a nuisance. Coal can come from the breaker clean as a whistle, but every time it's moved or dumped or scooped or poured or had a bumpy ride, it will generate fines.

Thanks, it lessons the blow. I don't care as long as I can buy it ,I will burn it ! After learning learning about the top vents. It was the missing link . It seems to burn a lot better, no more burn hair and eyebrows. It took me 10 years or so . I had a duh moment and said I'm sure you can find something on the web. Thanks Clem

Thanks to all the replies .I can't believe the difference, using the top vents made all the difference. I have an automatic damper, I don't use it anymore. It seems the 2 nickel sized holes in the ash door and the upper vents makes the furnace burn perfectly. I adjust the feed door vents, leave the ash door holes open and it burns efficiently. (It's a new world) Thanks to the Coalpail, that I never knew existed. Thanks Wilt6969
