When I had a wood stove with glass doors, I could see the gasses burn from the secondary burn tube.
With my DS 1100 wood/coal boiler it's a solid door. My secondary air intake for burning wood gasses is above the feed door. How can I tell if the gasses are being burned ? How far do I open the spinner to let air in to burn the gasses. Is there such a thing as having it open to much or not enough?
Secondary burn in my DS 1100 boiler.
bcdex, I used to run a hand fired Gibratlar and you just need to open the top (firebox) door spinner about enough so you could slide a couple credit cards thickness between the spinner and the door. Maybe like 1/2 turn or so from fully closed. Takes very little air over the fire for secondary burn of coal, much much less than for wood.
I'd love to know how do you like the DS 1100? How many square feet you heating w/ it? I'm thinking of getting a DS 3200 with the hot water coil. Do you have any trouble maintaining 180 degree water in the boiler ? Also if you open up the dampers can you get the water up to 190 or so if need be for the really cold days?
best,
