I'm starting to look around the used market for a hand fired coal boiler. I have a lagano g201 and hand riddle. The unit is way over sized so I've put in a home made fire box reducer. It kicks up a lot of dust when I hand riddle and the ash pan is a bit small and messy for coal. Otherwise is really works well.

Problems I'm trying to solve are finding a boiler that can idle down well as my net btu requirement is 55k (so says the hvac guy). Reduced dust everywhere from shaking/riddling. And something that i could tend no more than twice a day (like now). Parts availability is key too.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think your going to have much luck finding a used hand fed boiler as the issues with insurance and having the boiler tested to certify its being safe for use and acceptable by the insurer as they may not even continue your insurance if you install used boiler or if something happens pay a damage claim.

Short of the smallest Harman hand fed boiler or a keystoker kaa-2 I don't see much of an option for you.

Hello Leone, At what point in time would a NEW boiler change over to be called a "USED" boiler? Or is "USED" after the plumber leaves? I'm confused as to when this change takes place???
Is your K boiler still NEW? Will it be NEW still tomorrow?

It is pretty much just like driving a new or used car off a car lot in my opinion.
It comes down to what someone is willing to pay for one.
We talk about used boilers on the heating help forum and buying and selling them.

A ds bucket a day style boiler coupled to a buffer tank would probably meet what your looking for.

Planning to burn anthracite. I've already checked with my insurance company. They love coal hate wood. Wood is fire hazard. I've seen the bucket a day and ds1100. Woc40 and efm wc24 on the radar. A little gun shy on bucket a day. Probably shouldn't be. Anyone use it for central heating vs domestic hot water?

B.A.D. is a DHW water heater...too small for heating most all dwellings.

To heat a dwelling you'd want a 60-100 pound fuel charge capacity, depending on heat loads.

Seems like not much in-between. I ran the 503 insert during the coldest days of the year and it kept my 2400 sq house at 70 and not even full bore. I did have to tend it every 8 vs 12+ but it was below zero on those days. No oil. I reduced my 140k buderis coal boiler box in half and it seems to be handling it ok. No more cold spots in fire bed or dumping to dump zone.

Since my heating load seems on the low side are there any hand fired unites that under run better than others? They all seem about the same.

D S does make one in that style that puts out 105kbtu. Its an option for a low heat demand situation.

Insurance companies have no issue with boilers and furnaces, new or used as they consider them conventional devices. A stove is what they worry about as they are considered "supplemental" heating.

Thanks. Will look at ds more closely. I've been toying with the idea of a 520 too. If i only had my monster garage built...

Love my DS 1100 hand fed boiler.
I’m just curious as to how much coal does it hold on a refill?
Also does it ever have a problem with getting all clogged up with clinkers?

New Yorker 90 would fit your demands perfectly.
