I responded to a craigslist ad for three tons of free coal. It was in the basement of an 1812 house being renovated and flipped by the new owner. Wheel barrowed it across the basement to a bilco door style exit where I staged the super sacks. When full the owner used his Kubota to lift them out and place them on my trailer. And then...I arrived home to find a very nice roast beef dinner whipped up by my sweet heart wifey poo. Fun day! But I’m beat. Tomorrow I’ll get it into the bin.

Good deal on the coal find.
I see that we live fairly close, I'm just east of the river across from the battle grounds.

Howdy neighbor!
We are very close....I’m on the other side of the river, about half way between Saratoga and Schuylerville. My daughter and her family live in Greenwich.

Morning Don;
With our temps the last few days and the potential snowfall towards the end of the week and next that extra coal will be handy.
I'm actually south of Greenwich in Easton but mail has to go thru Greenwich. So you must be in the Grangerville area or a bit north In the Town of Wilton.
Where have you been getting most of your coal from?
Not a lot of choices around here, Garnseys stopped a few years ago, Lavern Davis over in Cambridge, Mullholland over in Greenfield, Kieth Jordan up in Granville and Hoosac Valley Farmers' Exchange Inc down in Schaghticoke.
It's amazing the number of people that you will stumble across on different forums that you live close to and don't know.

Seems its getting coal-crowed around there :D We have a place west of Don, a few blocks from the flat track.

Nice, Don. Free coal and a roast beef dinner.... must be all that clean living. :D

Lou, yes....Wilton. The extreme south east corner on Louden Rd.
I called Laverne last week, he wants $340/ton bulk plus a delivery cost. Can’t do that with a Tractor Supply 3 miles away getting $315/ ton bagged. I’ve been pulling free coal from an old vaudeville theatre being renovated in Hudson Falls. About 3 tons to go but it’s not easy as all coal must come up through the same 2x2 hatch that it went into the bin through. I’m rigging up a winch system that will lift a plastic 25 gallon barrel through the hatch. From there I’ll hand truck it over to a doorway where my Kubota’s bucket will take it from there to a 4x4x8 box on the trailer. I find the problem solving is just as much a thrill as burning the free coal.
Paul...hard to tell how crowded it’s getting. We are still few and far between. 😁
Until August anyway. Then it gets very crowded in your neighborhood!

OK, the price is good.
I have been getting mine and my brothers up in Granville, $256 a ton this fall picked up.
We also got 8 tons that week from Kieth.
I am surprised that Laverne is still working the coal he's getting a ways up in years.
Yes, Paul there is almost no way I'll go around Saratoga during the track season.
I do like the Tequilaria over there, the Mexican Connection, some very nice upper end Tequilas.
Heck I don't like going there this time of year.
It's bad enough going over to the Wilton Mall.

That Wilton Mall is at the other end of the road. I’m looking forward to the day it shuts down and those traveling on Louden Rd are not trying to save ten seconds by flying 55+ in a 45. It’s the ‘shortcut’ that saves about 1/4 mile of travel on fit 29 which is 55 mph. Most of Louden is sharp curves and restricted to lesser speeds. Since September eight cars have run off the road in a half mile stretch. Four of them at the same spot. Luckily our house is 500’ off the road and not effected.
Can you tell it’s a hot button for me? 🤬

Anyway...I’m off to BJ’s to get a gallon of cheap cooking oil for the recent coal score. Very dry and very dusty. And I just saved myself by bringing this back to topic.

Yup, Saratoga has turned into northern NY's grid lock capital during track season..... and it's still growing with all the high-rise apartments they keep building.... without adding parking!!!! Reminds me of why I moved off Long Island.

But it did turn up a coal range for me. Got it from a stove shop that used to be in Saratoga and had a place over toward Schuylerville, where the stove was stored. Went there to buy a wood stove and came home with a coal stove.

I’m blessed is my guess!
Sunday’s snow put a damper on basement coal mining for a while but there’s still that 3 tons in Hudson Falls calling out to me. Will work that one in March.
Storage is the issue now. I’m thinking about a small pole barn bin with concrete floor for future finds.
