Running OWB on Anthracite

If the boiler worked well with wood, the question then is how much wood? By weight coal should need only about half. It's possible that not enough coal is in the fire box to get a long enough burn.

If it is still bricked like the first photo...
You need more coal engaged in the burn...
If you sealed all the air leaks...
You may want to ditch the bricks and use a riddler...

Loaded 50 lbs yesterday morning. 14 hours later still was making temperature. Probably had another couple hours before I started the downward spiral. I use the riddle method of ash removal. Sliding a bar, in my case a fireplace poker between the coal and the grates. Removed the ash and added 30 lbs to get back to a full load. Good for another 12 hours.

A riddler is a bar you slide under the ash bed and above the grates to remove ash in lieu of, or in addition to shaking. My setup does not have a shaker system, so i run a long fireplace poker between the coal bed and grate to get the ash to clear and drop through the grate.
