I am considering buying a used wc 130 New Yorker boiler but not sure of the age, I cant find any info on the last time they made the wc model. I was able to print a user manual off of the new Yorker site. I am also considering just buying a new Heather H 8 boiler. Does anyone on here have one and if so how is it doing for you? I have 3500 sq ft of radiant and 1500 radiant in garage, I wanted to also install a ceiling hung water to air in the garage till I get the walls insulated, the radiant in the garage is not too effective. I am not sure the wc 130 is capable of the task. open to all comments,,, thanks!

Are you only considering hand fired boilers?

I have pretty much decided to go with hand fired as I have lots of woodland I need to clean up. So wood with the coal is the way I am heating now and although a stoker would be nice, I would not have access to it without buying a tractor trailer load or buying by the bag here at the box stores.

What are you using now to heat the home?

The Heather looks like a nice big heavy boiler. Don’t hear much about them around here.

I know DS and Keystoker have similar models.

I presently have a large 1802 clayton wood and coal furnace,I installed two 1 inch stainless domestic coils in the firebox and circulate the radiant thru them, I also have a tankless water heater that I cycle a few times a day manually . I have the warm air piped into the 3500 home, a little is coming out to keep the garage 1500 from freezing, its 12 degrees tonight. I have a good medium sized coal fire, couple of logs in there and the radiant water is about 80 degrees and pumps are continuous. The house is a toasty 72. about 80 in the hallway where the warm air is coming out of vent.... I can achieve 120 radiant temps with the tankless water heater and its lp and very expensive to use stand alone,,, so I was hoping that a "real" boiler would get my water temps up to the 120 to 130 and my floors would get really toasty warm.I cant fault the Clayton, its a good heavy duty furnace, its just not a boiler.

the heather does not specify either, I assume it will burn both just fine. All the handfed furnaces I have ever fired burn both types fine also

And...Which are you planning to use? Big differences when it comes to burning one or the other.

Why I am asking, Both are coal, yes... But not like asking, Both are wood, and, will you use hickory or oak.

I have both hard and soft coal available, but neither are stoker unless I buy anthracite in bags, that's about 350 a ton at box stores. I would be burning both. the coal I am burning tonight is hard coal, called 5 block. it is hot burning and nearly no smoke from chimney

do you have experience with bituminous coal? in your furnaces? what is your method of transfer ? radiant or other?

Only experiment with bit in small stoves. I burn only anthracite in a stoker boiler w/ air coil in duct, a few fin tube baseboard and a indirect water heater.
Have been studying radiant heating designs and done some controls for other's systems. Will be adding some radiant in near future.

I have been using local coal, sometimes hard coal but mostly bituminous from the coalfields of WV since 1973 when I built my first barrel stove to burn coal, then about 2 years later I built a large forced air coal burner for the body shop but made it too thick, had poor transfer, finally sold it and bought the Thermo Pride wc 27 I still use in the shop today, fire in it right now,,, and also firing the big Clayton today too. I bought two tons from a guy two weeks ago, its lump and some slack, but burns like crazy!!! I had to jump through hoops to get my insurance to approve my current furnace but managed to get it done. I guess you could say I have been experimenting with coal and wood my whole life.. I remember as a kid,our house was heated with a wards coal furnace , forced air, had a humidifier on front of it, you poured water in. I used to help fire it some, as a kid. thanks for all of your input!!!
