Hand Fed Coal Boiler: New Yorker WC-120

Post by AstroKid » Mon. Jun. 08, 2015 5:03 pm

Hi I'm AstroKId! I'm new to this forum and looking for some info/help.
I recently bought a house and it has a New Yorker WC-120 add on plumbed into the oil burner. I'm told previous owners mostly burned coal in it.
Unit looks in good shape , I just don't know enough about them. Anyone on here use one? Are they efficient , well made? etc..... Thanks for any an all help!

Hey Fred,
I do not have pics. We close in 3 weeks. I'm more curious about the stove it self. Use it, sell it or junk it?
Trying to find info from users before I know it it will be winter...

Your New Yorker is a combination coal/wood burning boiler. It is a good product but like coin collecting, condition is everything. If it was in use chance are it's ok. If it's not leaking and the system is showing water pressure, that's a good sign. One key is to clean it as best as you can. It will burn coal with a few caviats.

Have you ever burned coal in a boiler before?
Have you ever burned coal in anything before?

When you get into the house, take as many photo's as you can of each side, top, and all doors open. Include a photo of the chimney from inside and outside the house. That would give us a lot of information to get you started.

And to expand on his post, take pictures of the inside of the boiler, including the grates and the ashpan area.

The more 'high quality' pictures you provide, the more accurate the advice you will receive.

There are active threads here on the forum about the New Yorker WC-90. Shouldn't the New Yorker WC-120 be its big brother?

The New Yorker 130 is the big brother, as far as I understand the 120 is hot air?

No, the 120 is a predecessor. It is similar in many ways to the current 90 and 130, but AFAIK is more efficient because the flue gases pass through a firetube heat exchanger vs. the firebox flue design of the current units.
