Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Prairie Wood Heater using coal grates
Coal Size/Type: pea

Post by bullroc3 » Fri. Sep. 05, 2014 1:20 pm

I am and have been using a Prairie Wood Heater with coal grates since 1981. It is a hand fired coal/wood boiler. I have had the coal grates re-cast twice as I simply burned them out. I am now in need of the draft control motor on the rear of the unit. Does anyone have one of these units for parts? The company went out of business several years ago.

There is a company called FASCO. They make all kinds of motors for replacing original equipment. If you have the specs , or a name on the original, check with their web page.

I gave a pellet stove, that was made in Vancouver, B.C.(Envirofire -mid 90,s model), to a friend about 5 years ago. Well, the convection blower died this last Winter. Fasco had a replacement. You might get lucky!

Cheers

This draft control motor...is it on a blower/fan?

The motor operates off an aquastat. When the water temp gets below 140, motor runs and lifts an arm that is attached to a flap at the bottom of the stove via a chain. Once the water temp is back up, aquastat releases the motor and flap closes. I have pictures but am new here and have to figure out how to post them.

Here is the operation.

This is the draft motor. As you can see the arm just moves up and down.

McGiever - that item might work. Wish I could see it in operation.

It would work, by adjusting the distance outward where chain attached will change the distance that the chain will travel upward.(stroke)

The Honeywell does operate at 24 volts AC, so it your existing one is 120Volt then a transformer will be needed.

Thanks, I will check into it. BTW, it is 24 volts so it should not need the transformer.

24 V transformer or the aquastat is suspect now.

You need to test for voltage.

I mounted this unit on the rear of the boiler near the old draft control. I re-connected the old motor and it is operating so something tells me that it may be a power problem. I will be checking this out tomorrow. I with the help of friends disassembled the three parts to the boiler and replaced all gaskets and re-aligned the parts. I will be replacing the pressure relief tomorrow as the old one was leaking after we opened it to drain the water so we could lift the top portion. It will be getting cooler soon here in NEPA so time is running short.

Bought a new Big Tex SR10 dump trailer to haul my own coal. My coal supplier driver/owner suffered a stroke and can no longer drive. They are depending upon part time drivers to help them out. So I took the plunge, bought the trailer and became independent of drivers and deliveries. They have a place to pick up you own coal not too far from where I live. It works well for delivering pellets to my son. Good investment.

Is this all worth it?? YOU BET. The whole house takes on that warm feeling having that coal burner humming in the cellar.

Sounding more like aquastat, since you had old motor run.

I have the same heater and the exact problem this year when I fired it up. Did you by chance find a solution?

 Trace the electric power to see where it stops.
