Hi - I am currently looking at a sfb-101 boiler to burn coal. cant find a spec manual.

I have some questions?
How many gallons of water does it hold? It has a water jacket not coil?
What size anthracite coal? How much coal can it hold?
How do you shake the grates?

Thxs.

Try calling Burnham and ask for a manual.

It holds about 40 gallons IIRC. It has a coil if it is set up to heat domestic hot water, it was an option. All boilers have a water jacket, that's what makes them boilers.
Nut coal, should hold about 80# total. Be sure to fill it right to the top every time you reload it.
There should be a square shaft at the top when you open the ash door to shake the grates, if it doesn't have one and the grates are fixed you have a wood burner. Burnham may be able to supply the parts you need to burn coal but I would call them first before you buy it.
Ask them to send you a manual while your at it. If you can't get one from them, PM me, I'll send a copy of the one I have.

I’m picking up an sfb 101 tomorrow in great shape with all the accessories. I’d love to be able to get my hands on a factory manual. A pdf or anything would be great if you could help. Paying 500 for mine but lots of plumbing and all the Honeywell aquastatsExtra firebrick etc.

I posted it a little while back, let me see if I can find it. It must have the shaker grates to burn coal. The wood grate is fixed and won't work with anthracite.

Yes it has the shaker grated. Still outside my bulkhead ready to slide down, gonna hold it back with it tied to my truck. Thank you sooo much. I have lots of steel panels with it and I have to figure out where they go. The aqua stats aren’t a problem. In fact I might use my old ones because they are mostly wired up already, Thanks again.

Here are some pics of the boiler installed. I was impressed with how well it burns the coal. Even at idle for about 48 hours I was able to shake it every 8-12 hours. It didn’t take much shaking to start dropping some burning coals. I let it burn out entirely. After shaking the rest of the burnt ashes out it left about 2” of unburnt coal on the grates and the ashes were well burnt with no clinkers at all. I was afraid the angle on the sides of the box would collect ash but the shaker grate works great. Everything shakes out perfectly. Very impressed. Well that’s my story but I forgot how to post the pictures.

I actually did the entire plumbing and electrical myself. Also had to buy and install a new 275 gallon oil tank due to it starting to leak. Pretty proud of myself. I have another story of my stupidity to post shortly.

Beautiful install. I am surprised you did not change it to forced induction. :D

I have a great draft and I can tell I could let it idle for a long time. But I have never used my boiler in the summer. I find that I use very little oil all summer so it’s not really worth it to me. Plus the price of oil now is so low! That’s why I filled my tank and the unusually heavy weight allowed a leak to start at one of the legs🤭😳

Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Burnham SFB 101. Wood burning. No coal out here but lots of wood

Anyone know where I could get the whole shaker grate assembly for the sfb101? When I got this unit it was new but never installed. It was basically just the boiler with doors. Nothing else. No firebox parts, no outside cabinet, no nothing.

I had to build out a firebox, cabinet, controls, etc for burning wood
