A First Look at Chubby Smoker/Grill Combo Unit

Thought some people here on NEPA might be interested in seeing the first part of the new prototype Grill/Smoker Combo unit we are creating here at Chubby Stove's version of Lockheed's "Skunkworks" division. :D

This is the first prototype of the Grill section. This section will connect to the "Smoker" section as the heat source so a person will be able to of course smoke ribs, pork shoulders, make jerky ect ect ect.

Being built in detachable yet fully connectable sections this part is not only the heat source for the smoker section but will also double as a portable grill. Suitable for tailgating at your favorite event. Or for general home use.

Using plate steel and cast iron in the construction will help retain and produce the steady even heat needed for smoking. If all works out as planned (and we see no reason it won't) a user will be able to choose his heat source. Charcoal, gas or electric, with a simple and quick change from one source to another. Making this unit somewhat unique. Also being planned is a cart with a prep table that is designed for the "Smoker/Grill".

As always your comments and suggestion are more than welcome.

I don't grill much, but gotta say, that is really cute!

I'm sure the cost would be preventative, but its easy to picture that in porcelen (sp), or at least different bright colors, which would be a suggestion. I realize we are mostly do-it-yourselfer's here, but different color options may sell a few more units to the general, lazy population that would never paint anything.

Any pics of the inside or is that still being worked on?

Kelly Johnson, the "Head Skunk"and the Original Daddy of Lockheed's Vaunted Skunk Works would be Proud !! :woot:

I suspect that we will provide a range of colors. As for porcelain? That could be an option. a GREAT option at that! Assuming we can find someone local that can handle it. . Hopefully these units will become "tailgating" must haves down the line.

The inside and grate area will look like any other grill. Though cast iron grates are being considered. Before that happens the prototypes have to be finished and tested. All kinds of tests have to be done in this day and age.

As I can I will post some more pics of this project and some others in the pipeline. Lots going on here in Chubby land!

I am so looking forward to "Shaking Down" one of these combo units with copious amounts of ribs and pork shoulders. Not to mention more than few "LOLLIPOP" Ribeyes on the grill section as well. Yes it will be a fun time! Thank God I am a country boy! Though as with all ideas like this the prototype phase can take a while. Then you have the testing that has to be done. But I am confident it will happen.

Grille surface?
Weight?
The blower holes ( minus tubes) are smoke output in front?
Bottom is the bolt in steel plate?, does it have the heat shield?
Ash pan ?
Gas unit has a system of nozzles in there?
just place a grilling pan on top, no lid?
I think the bigger door with the words "RIB CHUBBY" might be in order? no?
Tell me more, save me a trip back down there to "grill" the master at whats going on!!

Next Spring I was going to buy a Weber, but; if Chubby makes a durable, viable grill I will certainly rather give my dollars to Larry than Weber.
I'm Southern and BBQ is a sacred thing so the grill has to be up to snuff. :)

I'm hoping it comes with cast iron cooking grates.

I will see if I can get Larry to pry loose with some more photos. Cast iron grates are being considered Don.

The extended plans are for a modular unit than can be converted into several different configurations and fuel types with ease.

Above all else, I'm glad to see a small business here in America succeed and do well. Also, keeping our Yankee ingenuity alive and well is another thing that makes me proud when I read posts like this. Good luck Mark and Larry!!
