- Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Stokermatic Mountainman 85
Good morning!
I've recently moved into a home with a stokermatic mountain main 85 / warrior 95 and I love the heat... when it works.
My main two issues are that...
1. The motor will continue running but the "feeding-arm" seems to get jammed.
(I'm referring to the long spirally metal thing that feeds the coal from the hopper to the fire)
2. The amount of coke trees I get is ridiculous. I'm pulling out 7 or 8 large ones (larger than my both my fists) a day because they fill the burning area and smother the fire.
Excuse my vocabualary as I have no idea what these parts are actually called.
Below is a video that accurately and visually shows these two issues:

Can't help you much, but
going to the Pease Feed & Coal web page and looking at the "A" gearbox diagram
you should have a shear pin going thru the outer hub of the drive and feed worm.
If that has sheared you may just have friction driving the auger which might allow unloaded rotation
but not loaded.

Welcome E. To the forum. Real nice video showing your issues. One of the knowledgeable stoker guys on here will get you going in the right direction. Looks to me like your coal size is wrong it caused you to sheer a pin on your auger and its why your getting big clunkers. You came to the right place for help.

looks like a shear pin broke.
are you getting coal from the same source as the previous homeowner?
this might help you, not sure if you found this in a search or not Stokermatic Superheater Manual & Over-Fire Air Jet

From the manual referenced above it would seem like pea would be the closest size coal recommended for your stove.
From the previous pictures it looks like you have nut sized coal.
7. use good c o o l , with not more than 2o% ( f i n e s ) i n i l . We recommend a 2 0 / 8 0
o i l t r e a t e d blend, meaning 2O% fine cool and 80% 3/16" to l " diameter c o a l
blended toqether to make coal is known as stoker cool
The link above, from lincolnmania;
Stokermatic Superheater Manual & Over-Fire Air Jet
Will get you to an operation and owners manual
You may get good results after replacing the shear pin and going with smaller coal.
Good luck.

Fantastic. I couldn't find me a manual anywhere and thankful for that link! I'm sure this will help a lot for future things as well.
Looks like I'll look into replacing the shear pin. When I get home I'll take a look at the manual and see if I can find where that's at and post an update.
I'm disappointed to learn that the coal I have may be too large. Here in Utah I've only been able to find one supplier and that's the supplier the previous owners had used and they say this is the only size of stoker coal they've got. I might find myself having to crush this or something.

the manual says nothing bigger than one inch with 20 percent fines.
i would screen the coal. break up the larger stuff somehow.

Yeah, I suppose screening will do for now. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm confused on the shear pin. I'm used to the idea of a physical pin, like on my snow blower... I'm wondering if I'm misunderstanding and maybe I should be looking for something else?
I've attached a photo but I see no place for me to insert a physical pin. According to the diagrams I interpret it should be right here since this is what moves the feeding arm.
I also see no evidence of a broken pin. I can't imagine it disappearing. I should see a broken one right?

When you rotate the square on the end of the auger does the feed auger
turn? If so the pin is ok. I am just speculating . I looked at the video to help.
At 1:47 in the video the outer hub is turning but it looks like the center with
the square shaft is still , it should be connected together through the shear
pin. Is there a hole through the outer hub and the center shaft that's usually
where the pin is so it can be easily replaced.

Yes, when I turn the square end manually the feed auger does turn. This is actually how I reversed out much of the coal initially - slowly using a drill and a gatorgrip bit haha.
I don't see any hole in either the outer hub nor the inner shaft. I had assumed that's where the pin should be - but it does not appear to be possible.

Looking at the picture you posted it appears that the outer drive collar has a pair of spring clips that enclose it,
they may pop off to expose the shear pin. Those spring clips may be the shear pin retainers.

If the inner shaft is able to be turned manually, it indicates it no longer is coupled or tied to the gear turning it. The shear pin is sheared. It is plainly shown in the illustration.
