Hi Everyone, Since getting my baseburner last September I have had it running for approx 3 months 24hrs a day 7 days a week . This has given me the opportunity to get to try and fine tune the stove to extract as much heat as needed depending on outside temp as economically as possible . The reason is that anthracite is a ridiculous amount of money £ 375 a tonne . Probably burned approximately 1 and a 1/4 tonnes over that period . Think the stove was burning about 40/ 45lbs over a 24 hr period . So over the winter period ( with no complaining about the heat output) and now the stove is redundant till next winter I decided to look for a cheaper alternative. I know you guys over the pond are die hard anthracite uses, and to be truthful I would be really happy to continue to use it if it wasn’t so expensive ! Anyway there is a company in the north East of England that produce a smokeless man made fuel , so I ordered a tonne a few days ago and it was promptly sent by courier within two days of payment . Anyway gave it a go in my Parlor stove and was really impressed with the heat output and it all burns to ash + it was £300 a tonne so saved £75 😁. Not sure how it will be when I load the baseburner up next winter ,but it certainly burns hot and for a long period . Know you can’t buy it over there but just wanted to share my thoughts with you all . Hope you are all keeping well . Regards Wal

Ive seen that exact add on Facebook Marketplace and assume it is some form of spam because of who and where it is advertised (plus the mention of euros) but maybe Im wrong. I wouldnt be scared of it at all if it is price competitive to anthracite. Other than that add, I have only seen people offer similar briquettes a couple times so it isnt common in my area. Perhaps in the eastern USA its more common. I dont know.

In England because we have designated smoke free areas there are numerous companies producing man made smokeless fuel . Bituminous coal is banned in these areas so it’s either wood , man made coal , or anthracite . It was all to do with the smoke produced by houses burning coal in there fireplaces in built up areas . So parliament in the 1960s made a decree that the most of Britain 🇬🇧 would burn smokeless fuel .

I found this website describing how this man made fuel is made.

https://pearsonfuels.co.uk/how-is-smokeless-coal-made/

I have no idea how smokeless coal could result in 20% less CO2 than plain anthracite since that is its main ingredient. Also a mystery that anthracite that is ground into a powder, mixed with a binder and formed into a briquet could be 20% cheaper than the anthracite.

Are there any combustion/chemical engineers out there that can explain?

I'm just curious, what's the BTU value per pound of this smokeless man made coal?

A coal breaker probably has tons of fines from breaking and sorting coal.
This is a great way to get rid of otherwise useless fines.

Im assuming the higher BTU is because its drier?

Wal, Which do you think burns better, anthracite or ovoids?

Mmmm- When I used the nut sized anthracite in my baseburner it produced plenty of heat and lasted a long time . Originally I used excel smokeless that is made by another company it like all man made smokeless is easy to light and burns as hot as anthracite , but excel was burning faster . So for ease of lighting the man made smokeless wins , both produce I would say similar heat output , but anthracite burns the longest . As I am using the newburn smokeless I was impressed by how it performed and everything burns to a fine ash . In a ideal situation I would use the smokeless for the Parlor stove and deville , and use anthracite for the baseburner but my coal bunker only holds 1 tonne , so I bought the new burn as it is nearly £70 cheaper , and as you can see £375 English pounds per tonne is a lot of money to go thru in 3 months !!
