Unfortunately I do not have a instruction Manual for the 3720 Petite Round stove and am trying to figure out how the exhaust manifold works. From what I have been reading on the forum, the manifold is set up for lower exhaust. There is no cover plate in either the top or bottom. The manifold simply connects the upper port with the lower port and exhaust exits from the low side. Is this normal? Shouldn’t one of the ports be blocked off? The attached picture shows what the lower exhaust port looks like. Nothing appears to be missing..

I have always seen them set up this way. It does provide better heat exchange in the manifold. The danger is in ash blocking that lower port. Might be best to have a tee there with cover to make that area easy to inspect and clean.

Thank you for the quick reply. I guess it’s normal for the manifold to bridge both the upper and lower ports. Neither port is blocked? I guessing that coal can be added above the lower port..

Coal must be loaded to just below the upper port as soon as practical to allow the stove to draw properly. Otherwise air will bypass the coal through that front grill.

I picked up a 4” to 6” stove pipe adapter and fired up the 3720 on wood. After about 2 hours of burn and barrel temperature of 400 F, all the surface rust on the barrel turned black, as if it was repainted. Is that normal ? I never saw rust burn away..
