All the FB stoves I have used are earlier models and have no air openings other than what the thermostat allows. I would not be concerned as long as the thermostat is still controlling the fire, but if the fire seems to not be controlled and too intense, then I would block that hole.

Just forgetting to close one of the poker openings has a noticeable effect, so it does not take much to throw off the thermostat setting.
