I have been scraping for over an hour to get Rutland gasket cement out of the channel for a new gasket on a
Godin 3720. It was my understanding, from the instructions on the tube, that I should have cleam metal to apply new cement and new gasket. That stuff is like cement....lol.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
gadabout3

Okay franco b,

I am going to try to take the door off (which makes me very nervous), wetting the channel, allowing it to sit awhile then I will try cleaning again.
I had a little voice in my head that sounded a lot like franco b......are you happy......lol.

REVISION:
The door did not want to come off and I am not going to force it. I don't want to break a hinge. I am cramming wet paper towels in the channel and allowing them to sit for a while.
Then we will see.

Once set it is like any other set concrete cement . Water will not soften it . Has to be chipped or scraped off. When fresh it can be washed off with water to clean up , but not after setting. So use as little as possible. You may even find that the gasket holds well with nothing.

What about a dremel with a brass wire wheel? Beware any painted surfaces.

Knoted wire wheel on a 4-1/2" angle or side grinder for the impatient ;)

Fein with this blade will cut and chip out the cement...
Depends on shape and size of groove...
Plunge it in and point will chip out cement as you move tool left and right...

I have the tools to get it off. Are there any alternatives to this stuff?

Could have sworn I seen a new stove the other day that had a black “tacky” substance to hold the gasket on. The gasket wasn’t the typical old fiberglass gasket material either...the kind the ends fray when you cut it. This gasket was charcoal or gray colored, woven like a fabric end the ends fit perfectly flush together. Wish I could find some of it.

I use copper RTV. Good to 700 degrees.

Not saying it won’t work, but I would be upset if that stuff got all over the place. I’m skeptical of any silicones, but it’s just me. That’s why I was looking for another option.

I finally got the cement off with a combination of a sanding disk and a tiny wire brush using a Demel. I tore the heck out of the arber used to hold the sanding disk and the tiny wire brush, but I got it. I have plenty of arbers and I can get another wire brush for the Dremel.
That Rutlands is tough stuff. I got the new gasket on. Now to find out if the gasket was my problem.
Does any one know if they make a barometric damper in 4" to go with black smoke pipe?
I have had a hard time finding 4" accessories for black pipe in 24 guage.

Thanks for the input.

If you can find good old fashion water glass, that works well without building out the rabbit. I was lucky and found a small dropper bottle at my local hardware store in the stove gasket area. It wasn't labeled as water glass but just look for sodium silicate on the bottle.

I wouldn't advise it but you can make it yourself with lye and silica gel. Formulas are out there just like everything else.

At most good stove shops and made by and labeled "Imperial" in small white plastic dropper bottle, made in Canada...wouldn't use anything else myself. ;)

I too love this Imperial gasket cement. Goes on nice let it tack up and apply the gasket. On the stove may add to difficulty. Sticks well and is not that hard to remove and reprep for when maintenance requires replacement.

Here ya go, think it was from True Value Hdw.
Don't be fooled by the 2 oz. bottle size...this is "super glue" for super hot gaskets...
and your highest stove temps will never phase it...
