If it is for over fire air, it should be closed once the initial gasses are burned.

How about a picture of the stove with both doors open similar to what I posted. I still haven't seen the hopper.

So that stove doesn't have shaker grates in it? If not you will need to do what Franco said and run a poker thru the slot(?) Just above the grate to clear ash.

Does this stove have a dial for the draft and a door that opens and closes? How about a picture of the flue pipe. As franco b (I think) establish a fire and fill the hopper 'til no more coal will fit in the stove. Thanks for the other pic's, keep 'em coming ;)

...also, I see a gap and a chip in the hopper where the 2 halves meet. Fill the hole and any gaps with furnace cement. I get it at Tractor Supply in a caulking gun tube for about 3 bucks.

Hopper is in bad shape. Pea coal will extend the burn. Very important to clear ash buildup on those sloping sides as well, and then cover with fresh coal. Filling the hopper should do that.

If the fire is ash bound it will need tending frequently. Use a flat poker under that small door at grate level. Piece of steel 1/8 by 3/4 about 20 inches long.
