Hi folks, I was given a 1980 Russo #3. Other than being rusty and a broken glass window it's fine. On which side of the glass does the wire mesh go? One would think on the inside to spread heat evenly over the glass surface but then perhaps on the outside for protection against external damage and safety in case of a blow out?

On some stoves the screen is inside as Fred said. That's to protect the tempered glass from coal impacts cracking it as fresh coal heats up then snaps, pops, and shoots off pieces. Not much of a problem on stoves meant to burn the smaller sizes of coal, like rice and pea, but it can be with stoves big enough to burn nut and stove coal.

I'm guessin it real seriously depends on the stove--I'm not familiar with that one but friends have them on the inside of theirs--forget the brand stoves--they just looked like they belonged there. I know I clean the outside of my glass more often then inside. Scary stuff, but I'm bettin it will be a judgment call as to what looks right--love to see some pix though???

Thanks for the input guys. Looking carefully at the broken glass, I see soot marks in the shape of the hexagonal mesh so I guess the mesh, at least with this stove, is on the inside. I'll send pics when I'm finished.

Can get the pic right side up!
Just wire brushed and ground the rust. Ran out of primer on the front. Waiting for more Thermolux primer and midnight blue paint and glass. Maybe by the end of next week I can fire it up

Maybe does not need the wire mesh at all. Most stoves don't have it.
