My old Buderus 3115 had real thin rope gasket glued in a channel on the steel strips that secured the glass. There was also similar gasket on the door side of the glass secured to the door in a channel. The independant glass panels should be able to move slightly.

OK, that sounds about right, will need to look for one (and some high temperatures cement), why is rope alone not enough?

I would think the rope by itself should be sufficient. That's what seals most of these stoves doors.
